LYANTONDE, Uganda: Currently, the disease has invaded seven Sub Counties in the district, authorities have confirmed. The hit areas so far include Kashagama, Kinuuka, Kaliiro, Lyantonde Rural, Lyantonde Town Council, Mpumudde and Lyakajura Sub counties.

The District Health Officer (DHO) Dr. Okoth Obbo confirmed the epidemic, saying the infected children are quite many yet with no availability of medicine. He said the victims are now getting first aid and Vitamin ‘A’ treatment since no vaccines have so far been consigned to them by the Ministry of Health, hence calling the same authorities to their rescue.

“A number of children who are being admitted at the hospital are not in good condition. Vaccines need to be sent immediately before the situation gets out of hand,” he said. The over 30 victims are being kept at Kasambya hospital in Lyantonde Rural, Obbo announced.

Dr. Obbo also revealed that an isolation ward has been set up to protect other children in the facility center from infection. Most parents who were found at the hospital with their admitted children blamed their kids’ fate on their husbands who they claim, banned them from taking the tots for immunization.

Responding to this development, the Resident District Commissioner Suleiman Matojo Tiguragara warned that any parent who blocks their wives from immunizing children should be arrested henceforth.

“As security we have started investigating men who have turned violent to their wives by banning them from immunizing children, and whoever found will be charged in courts of law,” he roared.

Tiguragara affirmed that the World Health Organization team is in the district carrying out investigations on what could be the cause as well as sensitizing the community of the good in immunizing their children.
