SEOUL, Korea: The Uganda Community in Korea (UCK) are set to celebrate the Independence Day with an event at Velvet Club Lounge in Songtan South Korea on Thursday 5th October 2017 during the Chuseok holiday. The Independence Day in Uganda is celebrated on 9th of October each year; it is a day to celebrate Uganda’s freedom from British rule which occurred in 1962.

This will be the third Independence Day celebration of Ugandans living, working and studying in South Korea. This annual event will not only bring Ugandans in South Korea but also Ugandans working in China, Japan and Malaysia together.

The event will be graced by the Ugandan ambassador in Japan Hon. Ambassador Betty Grace Akech – Okullo, embassy officials and officials from the ministry of foreign affairs, according to the event organizer and coordinator Dr. David Nsubuga Kituuka.

Uganda has enjoyed bilateral relations with South Korea but does not have embassy in Seoul, while South Korea has embassy in Uganda headed by Ambassador PARK Jong-Dae. Ugandans living in Korea rely on the Embassy in Tokyo whose mission is to promote and strengthen cooperation between the Governments and People of the Republic of Uganda and Japan, Republic of Korea, the Republic of the Philippines and the State of Brunei Darussalam.

The Ugandan embassy in Tokyo has supported Ugandans living and working in South Korea on several issues such as travel documents and expired passport processing and other documents that Ugandans in Korea may need. The embassy also supported the Uganda community in South Korea with financial support to help them register the association as a Non-Government Organization. The association is now registered as NGO and has 300 active and registered members.

This year marked the 54th year of Korean-Ugandan partnership. In May 2013, there was a Korea-Uganda summit meeting in the Korean presidential office at CHEONG WA DAE, and there was another between the President of the Republic of Korea and Yoweri Museveni of Uganda in September 2014 to discuss how to promote a relationship between the two countries.

On May 29th 2016, President Park Geun-hye paid a state visit to Uganda and held a Korea-Uganda summit meeting at the State House in Entebbe. The two leaders agreed to strengthen cooperation across a wide range of sectors, including the economy, development and national defense.

The Independence Day will showcase Uganda’s diverse culture through attires, dance and Ugandan food such as Matooke, yams and cassava. There will also be the famous alcohol Uganda Waragi (the spirit of Uganda) and Malwa. Ugandans are encouraged to come dressed in the various Ugandan traditional outfits Gomesi and Kanzu and to bring their foreign friends, the UCK chairman Mr. Paul Kaziro says in the invite.

UCK is a nonprofit organization and nonpolitical founded in 2011 whose mission is to bring all Ugandans, living, studying, and working in South Korea.
