Singer Moses Ssali aka Bebe Cool is worried that his son Alpha who harbors such a big dream to become a world Football star might have it shattered short before it is actually realized.
Expected to be in London for a one month training with an undisclosed U18 premier league team, Alpha will need serious treatment on his left leg which he injured a few weeks ago while on a trip to Spain for some exposure games.
Unfortunately, the treatment might not yield the desired results and Alpha could miss the opportunity, thanks to Uganda’s Health Care System, which Bebe tags as worrying, very poor but also costly for sports injuries.
Going forward, Bebe wishes for the best from Government especially if it comes to health care system that would properly handle sports injuries that would eventually endanger sports talent and dreams.
Bebe notes that Talent, and in this case sports, is a source of employment and wealth if its development is organized, structured and protected well.
According to the self-confessed NRM supporter, Bebe says many players in different sports disciplines get injured but can’t get the right treatment because it’s so expensive.
Excerpts below:
A few weeks ago, on a trip to Spain for some exposure games, Alpha got an injury which seemed not so bad then. On his return, the injury was handled with our Ugandan soccer doctor’s directives and it seemed ok not until today (Wednesday) morning during training, he got hit again at the same spot.
He called the mum and we had to go to a professional Orthopedist who recommended an MRI and of course now he’s put the leg in a cast for 6 weeks not forgetting how expensive it was.
We were expected to be in London two weeks from now for a one-month training with an U18 premier league team but now because of this injury, this opportunity will be pending.
Since my shooting, I have thought about our HEALTH CARE SYSTEM and why government ignorantly recreates its own burden in many areas.
Talent and in this case, sports is a source of employment and wealth if its development is organized, structured and protected well. So many players in different sports disciplines get injured but can’t get the right treatment because it’s so expensive.
This forces the players and team doctors to resort to use of ice as the only way for treatment without even scanning the injuries which only helps temporarily.
But this prolongs the problem and actually worsens it for a player who is not paid well by the club despite the player’s coming from a family where no one cares to support financially or even morally.
At a certain point player are dropped by teams because they no longer play well or can’t even play hence back to square one ” street hustle” JOBLESS.
Such a person will take to the streets with hate and anger against government because he had a talent that was paying, but because he couldn’t afford treatment, he lost his career/job hence income.
This person becomes a government burden again economically and politically. A single sports personality could have been taking care of himself and family but they all loose out. This is one of the ways a bad healthcare system can affect a full sports sector.
Many times, I have passionately pointed out to many government officials that all the so called 70% young people in Uganda subscribe to either Culture or Sports sector directly or indirectly and that intentionally organizing and structuring these sectors through the concerned ministries and bodies like FUFA right from the grassroots would guarantee jobs and better life for any Ugandan.
As a concerned citizen, I pray that government redirects 30% of the oil/energy sector revenues into restructuring the culture and sports sectors and am sure by doing so, it will have empowered the 70% young people and guaranteed them jobs and a better life directly and indirectly. Get well soon my son.
