KAMPALA, Uganda: On 30 March 2015, the trigger happy gang struck around 8pm and killed in cold blood the then Senior State Prosecutor, Joan Kagezi at Kiwatule, a Kampala suburb as she headed home. The perpetrators are yet to be known. A year later, in the morning of November 26 2016, a similar wave of killing was carried out on Maj. Mohammed Kiggundu and his driver Sgt. Steven Mukasa, as they drove along Masanafu, in Lubaga division.

Similarly, just few months after Kiggundu, then husband to Mama Fina was gunned down, the Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIGP Andrew Felix Kaweesi, his driver and bodyguard were showered with bullets as he left his home in Kulambiro, Nakawa division for public lecture at the Uganda Christian University in Mukono in the morning.

As Ugandans warmed up to mark this year’s Heroes day celebrations, held at Kakumiro in Kiboga district, Arua Municipality MP (Yellow Man) and his bodyguard, Saidi Butele was shot and killed a few meters from his residence in Kawanda as he drove back home.

Though President Museveni who visited the scene of crime on Saturday morning described Hon. Ibrahim Abiriga’s killers as ‘senseless’, we can reveal that these are not just a bunch of ‘stupid nuts’, but very highly sophisticated people, who know what they are doing and are ready to execute their mission.

What eye witnesses say

The killers of Abiriga, knew his usual time of arrival home. Neighbors the Investigator had a chat with said Abiriga was always home at 5pm. Indeed, the assailants, whom eyewitnesses said were traveling in a numberless motorbike struck around 6pm, just as the ‘comic’ legislator and his bodyguard, a brother and UPDF officer approached home. Eyewitnesses, say, the assailants waited for some hours to poach on their prey. Even, as they lay their ambush, according to eye witnesses, the assailants remained wearing their helmets to hide their faces.

The assailants, who residents said were wearing helmets, fired several bullets at the passenger side ripping off the ribs and brain of the bodyguard, Kongo Buga Saidi Butele, aged 57. Butele, we have established was the legislators younger brother, and had just returned from a peace keeping mission in Mogadishu in Somalia.

The duo was driving the yellow beetle Vintage car registration number UBB107D when they met their death.

The President ordered the security agencies to work in unison to have the perpetrators arrested and prosecuted. “We shall do whatever it takes, and within our means to have these senseless people captured,” said Museveni at the residence of Abiriga.

This brings to the public attention, the presidents call for all citizens to be vigilant and always report suspicious characters. “If the residents had called police after seeing people wearing helmets and standing, perhaps the killers would have been arrested,” said President Museveni.

The Deputy Inspector General of Police, Brig. Sabiti, the Director CID, Grace Akello, and top security chiefs were seen at the scene of crime trying to establish how best to capture the assailants, whom residents say fled in a motor bike.

Unlike the killers of Maj Kiggundu who shot at the tyres, forcing the double cabin pick-up to veer off the road, these assailants shot bullets at the car, forcing Abiriga who was at the steering to hit a jack fruit and come to an abrupt halt. According to forensic experts at the scene of crime, the assailants killed the duo at very close range.

Police spokesman SSP Emilian Kayima in a statement said the killers had left behind an AK assault rifle that was being examined to established its source.

He said Police and other security agencies had cordoned off the crime scene to pick vital materials that would be used in investigations.

Just like, Joan Kagezi, Maj. Kiggundu and AIGP Kaweesi were murdered, most top security chiefs revealed to the Investigator that this seems was well planned assassination.

Programme for Abiriga burial

According to Clerk to Parliament, Jane Kibirige, Parliament will hold a special session to honor the late legislator on Sunday starting at 9am. This will be preceded by prayers to be held at the Gadhafi Mosque in Old Kampala at 7am.

The body of the legislator that has under gone autopsy at Mulago hospital will be airlifted to Arua thereafter for burial at Rhino Camp in Arua.
