In the midst of political turmoil within the National Unity Platform (NUP) party, His Highness Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II has delivered a poignant message that resonates not only with the faithful but also with politicians, urging them to embody love, humility, and respect for one another.
The Kabaka’s message comes at a critical juncture, where tensions within NUP have reached a boiling point following the suspension of Hon. Mathias Nsamba Mpuuga, the party’s Deputy President for Buganda region. Mpuuga’s suspension came amidst corruption allegations, leading to a heated exchange between him and party leader Robert Ssentamu Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine.
In a one-page letter shared on social media, Mpuuga fired back at Kyagulanyi, criticizing the party’s leadership and expressing sympathy for the desperate situation they find themselves in. He highlighted the prevailing atmosphere of reported `siege` and impairment of judgment within the party’s higher echelons, emphasizing the need for unity and consultation to chart a way forward.
Kyagulanyi’s decision to suspend Mpuuga was based on allegations of corruption and abuse of office, citing specific incidents during Mpuuga’s tenure as Leader of the Opposition in Parliament. Despite these accusations, Mpuuga has vehemently denied any wrongdoing, accusing certain elements within NUP of orchestrating a campaign to tarnish his reputation.
Recent developments saw the NUP’s National Executive Committee passing a resolution to recall Mpuuga from the Parliamentary Commission, hence further escalating tensions within the party. Amidst this political storm, the Kabaka’s message serves as a beacon of hope, reminding both leaders and politicians of the importance of humility, love, and respect in fostering harmonious relationships.
He emphasizes the need to emulate the virtues exhibited through the pain and resurrection of Jesus Christ, urging all to prioritize faithfulness and integrity in their daily lives. “Ensonga eno nkulu nnyo eri abakulembeze baffe ne bannabyabufuzi naddala nga tujjukira omukwano n’obwetowaze obweyolekera mu kubonabona n’okuzuukira kwa Yesu Kristo,” he wrote, literally translated as; “this (the above) is so key to our leaders and politicians especially as we remember the love and humbleness that were exhibited through the pain and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
As NUP grapples with internal strife, the Kabaka’s words offer a timely reminder of the values that should guide leaders and politicians in serving their constituents and upholding the greater good. Though a little too late, Kabaka’s message resonates as a call to transcend ego, arrogance, and selfishness, towards a path of unity and mutual respect.
Below is Mpuuga`s Response Verbatim
The President National Unity Platform (NUP), Kampala.
RE: PURPORTED SUSPENSION AS DEPUTY PRESIDENT… I’ve seen a circulating document on social media, purportedly signed by yourself, in the latest fashion by the party. If indeed it is your document and signature, I appreciate and sympathize with you on the current desperate situation. I appreciate and understand that you are under siege.
I don’t know how to help you and support you. In view of the contents of the impugned document, that the person suspended failed to supply a satisfactory explanation, yet the same person was earlier on reported to have confessed and apologized, I don’t know how to rescue you and the party from the captors.
The prevailing desperate situation and the circumstances we find ourselves in, will afford me more time and space to consult with the rank and file of the party for a way forward. Accept once again my sympathies for the unyielding siege that has impaired judgement at the highest echelons of the party. I remain at your service and that of the party and the country.
Mathias Mpuuga (MP)
COMMISSIONER OF PARLIAMENT.
