Navigating life’s economic challenges can often feel like an insurmountable task, especially for ordinary Ugandans. Dreams of landownership or owning a home can seem distant for many families. However, in the heart of Ruhinda Sub-County in Kampala resides an opportunity – the Ruhinda Sub-County Kampala Residents United SACCO (RUKUSA).
RUKUSA, a community Savings and Credit Cooperative Organization (SACCO), is not just slowly but steadily progressing; it’s also sharply focused on even bigger projects for its members. With a vision to empower members to acquire land and build homes of their choice through their “Descent Living Project,” RUKUSA is rewriting the narrative of economic empowerment.
Membership in RUKUSA isn’t merely about numbers; it’s about quality. Over the past three years, the SACCO has seen 115 fully registered members who have shown a commitment to the community’s values and goals. Venensio Bagateireyo, the SACCO’s chairman, emphasized the importance of quality over quantity during their recent Annual General Meeting, stating, “We only register quality members whom we think can add value to the SACCO on our journey of changing lives around for our people.”
RUKUSA’s vision to be the leading and most competitive SACCO in Uganda is not just a lofty aspiration; it’s attracting significant interest. With about a hundred non-members expressing interest in joining during a recent gathering, it’s evident that RUKUSA’s impact is being felt far beyond its current membership.
Central to RUKUSA’s mission is to provide opportunities for members to mobilize savings and access affordable credit facilities. Many members have utilized loans with a minimal 4% interest rate to start businesses, purchase land, or build houses. This access to financial resources has transformed lives and turned dreams into reality for many within the community.
However, RUKUSA’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. Originally established in the early 2000s as a company limited by guarantee, the organization faced numerous obstacles before formally registering as a SACCO in 2021. Financial difficulties, particularly exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, tested the resilience of the SACCO.
Yet, it’s the unwavering commitment of RUKUSA’s leadership and members that has fueled its success. Bagateireyo and Erasmus Akankwasa, the SACCO’s treasurer, attribute their achievements to a dedicated team focused on problem-solving and empowering themselves and others.
For members of RUKUSA, the SACCO has been a catalyst for transformation. Many who once owned nothing now have homes, businesses, and educational opportunities they never thought possible. As RUKUSA continues to grow and innovate, it remains a beacon of hope for those navigating life’s economic challenges in Kampala’s Ruhinda Sub-County…
