Ugandan football giants SC Villa have been plunged into mourning following the untimely death of their captain, David Owori, who succumbed to injuries after he was reportedly attacked by suspected assailants near his home.
Owori, one of the club’s most respected leaders and a fan favourite affectionately known as “Colgate,” had been receiving treatment at Case Clinic before losing the fight for his life.
His death has sent shockwaves through Uganda’s football fraternity, with tributes pouring in from club officials, former administrators, teammates, supporters and rival clubs who remembered him as a committed professional, inspirational captain and humble gentleman.
Club Confirms Captain’s Death
In an emotional statement released on Wednesday, SC Villa confirmed the devastating news.
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the untimely passing of our captain, David Owori, who had been receiving treatment at Case Clinic following an attack by suspected thugs. Our deepest condolences and prayers are with his family. Rest in peace, Captain.”
The brief statement immediately triggered an outpouring of grief across social media as supporters struggled to come to terms with the sudden loss of one of the club’s leaders.
Hajji Omar Mandela Pays Tribute
SC Villa President Hajji Omar Mandela described Owori’s death as a painful loss not only to the club but to Ugandan football as a whole. “Today is one of the darkest days in the history of our club,” Mandela said. “David Owori was more than our captain. He was a leader, a mentor and a true ambassador of SC Villa. His commitment, discipline and love for the badge inspired everyone around him.”
“We have lost a remarkable footballer and an even better human being. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this incredibly difficult time.” Mandela called on authorities to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
“No family should have to lose a loved one in such a cruel manner. We hope justice will be served.”
Kasingye Calls for Justice
Club spokesperson Asan Kasingye described the incident as heartbreaking and urged security agencies to move swiftly in investigating the killing.
“This is a tragic day for SC Villa and for Ugandan football,” Kasingye said.
“David was a symbol of resilience, discipline and unity within our dressing room. His death has left an enormous void that will not easily be filled.”
He appealed to police to expedite investigations and provide answers to Owori’s grieving family and the football community.
“Our supporters deserve to know what happened. We trust the authorities to thoroughly investigate this crime.”
Ben Misagga Remembers the Player He Signed
Former SC Villa President Ben Misagga, who played a key role in recruiting Owori to the club, described him as one of the most dedicated players he ever worked with. “I saw something special in David when we brought him to SC Villa,” Misagga recalled.
“He was hardworking, humble and always willing to give everything for the club.” Misagga said Owori grew into an outstanding leader whose influence extended beyond the football pitch. “He earned the captain’s armband because of his character. He respected everyone and led by example. Losing him at such a young age is heartbreaking.”
He extended condolences to Owori’s family, teammates and the wider SC Villa fraternity.
Fans Struggle to Accept the Loss
Across social media, grief and disbelief dominated conversations as thousands of supporters paid tribute to the fallen captain.
One supporter wrote:
“Rest in peace, Captain. You always gave everything for SC Villa.”
Another fan posted:
“This is not acceptable. We have lost our captain in such a painful way. Police must ensure justice is done.” Others remembered Owori for his passion, determination and commitment every time he stepped onto the pitch.
“He always fought for the badge,” another supporter wrote. “You never questioned his commitment. He was a true Villa man.” Residents from Lukuli and Makindye, where Owori was well known, also joined the football fraternity in mourning his passing.
Football Community United in Grief
The tragedy prompted messages of condolence from clubs, sports personalities and football administrators across Uganda. Uganda Wildlife Authority Football Club expressed solidarity with SC Villa. “The UWA FC family joins the entire Ugandan football fraternity in mourning the untimely passing of SC Villa captain David Owori. Our heartfelt condolences go to his family, SC Villa, teammates, supporters and friends during this difficult time.”
Sports journalists, commentators and football enthusiasts also described Owori’s death as a huge loss for Ugandan football.
Several supporters shared photographs of the defender lifting trophies and celebrating victories in Villa colours, saying those memories would remain forever.
A Leader On and Off the Pitch
Owori had grown into one of SC Villa’s most dependable players and eventually earned the responsibility of captaining Uganda’s most successful football club.
Known for his composure, leadership and determination, he commanded respect from teammates and opponents alike.
His calm personality off the pitch contrasted with his fierce competitiveness during matches, qualities that made him one of the dressing room’s most influential figures.
Club insiders say he was always among the first to arrive for training and frequently encouraged younger players to maintain discipline and professionalism.
His leadership helped foster unity within the squad during challenging periods.
Calls for Improved Security
Owori’s killing has once again raised concerns over violent crime targeting citizens in urban areas. Supporters and community leaders have urged security agencies to strengthen neighbourhood policing and intensify efforts to combat criminal gangs responsible for attacks on innocent civilians.
Many fans called upon the Uganda Police Force to conduct a comprehensive investigation and ensure those behind the attack face the full force of the law. The circumstances surrounding the assault remain under investigation.
