Entebbe – Uganda: The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba yesterday held a strategic meeting with Gen Mohamed Ashraf from Egypt’s General Intelligence Service (GIS) at the Special Forces Command Headquarters in Entebbe.
During the meeting, Gen Kainerugaba lauded the deepening partnership between Uganda and Egypt, emphasizing their shared commitment to regional stability and development. He highlighted the countries’ recent achievements in collaborative initiatives, particularly in health and agriculture.
Shared Vision for Regional Progress
Gen Kainerugaba acknowledged the visionary leadership of Presidents Yoweri Museveni and Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, crediting them with laying a strong foundation for Uganda-Egypt relations. “The progress we have achieved is a testament to the commitment of our leaders and institutions to address common challenges,” Gen Kainerugaba noted. He underscored the importance of sustained cooperation in tackling regional threats, including health crises and transboundary diseases, which demand joint solutions.
Health and Agriculture Gains
Uganda and Egypt have made significant strides in public health and agriculture. Between May and December, Uganda received 10 million doses of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) vaccines from Egypt, along with equipment to facilitate local vaccine production.
In addition, Gen Ashraf personally delivered Hepatitis C drugs sufficient to treat 500 patients. This delivery underscores Egypt’s commitment to addressing pressing health challenges in Uganda. These contributions follow discussions held during Gen Kainerugaba’s October visit to Egypt, where he met then-GIS Director General Maj Gen Abdel Kamal and President Al-Sisi. While Maj Gen Kamal has since been succeeded by Gen Hassan Rashad, the partnership has continued to flourish.
Key Engagements and Partnerships
The meeting in Entebbe was attended by senior officials, including Maj Gen BD Mugisha, Commander of the Special Forces Command, who has played a pivotal role in receiving and coordinating Egyptian support. On Monday, Maj Gen Mugisha received the Hepatitis C drugs consignment at Entebbe International Airport, alongside Col McDans Kamugira, the CDF’s Military Assistant, and Dr Charles Olaro from the Ministry of Health.
The provision of FMD vaccines and Hepatitis C drugs marks a proactive response to Uganda’s needs, following Gen Kainerugaba’s engagement with Egyptian leaders. These developments signal a growing relationship that extends beyond defense into critical areas such as public health and agriculture.
Strengthening Ties for the Future
In reaffirming Uganda’s commitment to this partnership, Gen Kainerugaba praised Egypt’s role as a regional leader in health innovation and agricultural support. He also expressed optimism about future collaboration across diverse sectors, including technology and education. This meeting and the ensuing actions highlight the strong bond between the two nations, driven by shared goals of prosperity and stability for their people.
