“DID BATOOORO EVER LIKE KING OYO?” Social-media Users Question The Lavish Donation As The Kingdom Races Towards Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I’s September 29 Coronation

A brand-new Toyota Land Cruiser destined for Tooro Kingdom’s Chief Prince, Omusuuga Charles Kayondo Kamurasi, has arrived at the palace, sparking a fresh wave of debate among Batooro and other Ugandans following weeks of intense discussion about the kingdom’s succession.

The vehicle is understood to have been purchased through contributions from supporters who launched a campaign to raise money for a new car for the Omusuuga.

Tooro kingdom enthusiast Peace Komugisha, announced the arrival of the vehicle, saying: “The Batooro started up a campaign of buying Musuuga a 500m new car, today they bought the car and are taking it to him.”

She added that the vehicle was a Land Cruiser, before questioning the circumstances surrounding the fundraising.

Her post immediately generated reactions from Ugandans online, with some questioning why such an expensive vehicle had been purchased for the Omusuuga at this particular moment in Tooro’s history.

“Buying Musuuga a new expensive car during this time confirms something isn’t right in the kingdom,” Komugisha wrote, adding that she believed the gift could be interpreted as a reward for supporting the current succession process.

Those claims, however, are social-media opinions and have not been independently established as the reason for the donation.

Omusuuga Accepts Gift

The Omusuuga has publicly acknowledged and appreciated the people who contributed towards the purchase of the vehicle.

In his message of appreciation, he thanked everyone who participated in the fundraising effort and singled out Patrick Kabumba Kaboyo, the father of the late King Oyo, for special recognition.

The Omusuuga thanked Kaboyo for appointing him to his position in the kingdom, highlighting the long relationship between the two men and the institution of the Tooro monarchy.

His acceptance of the vehicle effectively places the donation within the broader transition currently taking place in the kingdom, in which the Omusuuga has played a central role.

Following the death of King Oyo on August 27, the Omusuuga assumed responsibility for the kingdom’s affairs pending the selection and installation of a successor.

Following the funeral of Omukama Oyo, the Omusuuga confirmed that the Babiito Royal Clan, under his leadership, selected Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma on September 9 as the new Tooro king.

The prince was subsequently presented to and endorsed by the Rukurato Rw’Obukama Bwa Tooro, the kingdom’s supreme council, which met on September 15.

He thereafter assumed the official name Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I and is scheduled to be crowned as the 13th Omukama of Tooro on September 29.

The Government has said it received the resolutions of the succession committee and the Rukurato supporting the process.

Car Arrives At A Sensitive Moment

The Land Cruiser has therefore arrived at a politically and culturally sensitive moment for Tooro.

The death of Oyo, who had occupied the throne since childhood, created a period of mourning followed by an intense succession debate.

The Queen Mother, Best Kemigisha, has repeatedly called for unity and peace among the Batooro, warning against social-media exchanges that could deepen divisions.

During Oyo’s funeral, she appealed to the people of Tooro not to allow disagreements over succession to destroy the late king’s legacy.

She also specifically cautioned against using social-media platforms to fuel divisions, noting that everyone now has a platform from which to express opinions.

The controversy surrounding the new vehicle has consequently unfolded against that background.

Online Reaction

For some Ugandans, the vehicle represents appreciation for a traditional leader who has carried significant responsibilities during a difficult transition.

Others have interpreted the purchase differently, particularly because of the reported cost and the proximity of the gift to the coronation.

The social-media debate has largely revolved around three questions: who financed the vehicle, why it was considered necessary at this particular time, and whether the donation has any connection to the ongoing succession politics.

Komugisha’s post captured the skeptical side of the debate, asking: “Did Batooro ever like King Oyo?”

She further suggested that the timing of the purchase raised questions about what she described as something being “fishy”, although those were her personal conclusions rather than established facts.

Other online commentators, however, have viewed the vehicle as a gesture of gratitude towards the Omusuuga for his role in guiding the kingdom through the transition following Oyo’s death.

A New Vehicle For A Powerful Office

The controversy also reflects the prominence of the Omusuuga’s office in Tooro’s traditional governance.

The Omusuuga is head of the Babiito royal clan and has been at the centre of the succession process following Oyo’s death.

According to the Uganda Media Centre, Kamurasi said that when Oyo died, he assumed the powers of the kingdom and would surrender those powers when the new king was installed.

His role has therefore placed him at the centre of the kingdom’s transition.

A new Land Cruiser could provide practical transport for such responsibilities, particularly given the extensive travel associated with royal, cultural and community activities.

Indeed, Land Cruisers are widely used in Uganda for long-distance travel, particularly in areas where road conditions can be difficult.

Just days before the Tooro vehicle controversy, the UPDF announced that CDF Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba had donated a brand-new Toyota Land Cruiser to the Uganda Media Centre to strengthen its operations, particularly long-distance travel.

The Sh500m Question

The figure of Sh500m attached to the campaign has generated particular interest online.

It is not yet clear from the information circulating publicly whether Sh500m represents the actual purchase price of the vehicle, the fundraising target, or the total amount mobilised for the initiative.

That distinction is important because the price of a vehicle can vary substantially depending on its model, specifications, taxes, registration and other associated costs.

What is clear, however, is that supporters considered the acquisition important enough to organise a fundraising campaign around it.

The Omusuuga has expressed gratitude to those contributors, effectively acknowledging that the vehicle was obtained through collective support.

Tooro Moves Towards Coronation

The vehicle controversy is likely to remain part of the wider conversation surrounding Tooro’s transition as the kingdom approaches the September 29 coronation.

Government has confirmed that President Yoweri Museveni is expected to attend the coronation of Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I.

The government statement said the succession process followed the recognised traditional institutions of Tooro and that the Babiito clan selected Kijanangoma before his endorsement by the Rukurato.

Meanwhile, the Omusuuga has appealed to friends of Tooro and well-wishers to support preparations for the coronation.

Against that backdrop, the arrival of his new Land Cruiser has become more than a vehicle story.

To supporters, it is an expression of appreciation for a traditional leader who has carried responsibility during a difficult period.

To sceptics online, its reported cost and timing have prompted questions about the motivations behind the fundraising.

For now, the Omusuuga has accepted the gift and thanked those who made it possible, while the debate among Batooro continues.

As the kingdom prepares to welcome its new monarch, the Land Cruiser has become an unexpected symbol of the competing emotions surrounding Tooro’s transition — appreciation, loyalty, suspicion and the continuing demand for clarity over the future of the kingdom.
