On Tuesday night, this publication reported that embattled Speaker of Parliament Anita Among could be facing mounting political pressure following comments by Chief of Defence Forces Muhoozi Kainerugaba on X.
Gen Muhoozi reportedly criticized what he described as extravagance among public officials after media reports alleged that the Speaker had acquired a Rolls-Royce vehicle said to be worth billions of shillings, at a time when many Ugandans continue to struggle with poverty and the high cost of living.
Over the past several years, Among has faced persistent public scrutiny over her lavish lifestyle, including reports of high-end properties in upscale areas of Kampala, expensive designer fashion, and the construction of an expansive residence in Bukedea District. She has also been associated with the development of a modern sports stadium in the same district.
Critics and political commentators have questioned whether such expenditures can reasonably be supported by a public servant’s salary, though no court has found the Speaker guilty of wrongdoing. “She has been living like Marie Antoinette. Many Ugandans are questioning the source of such wealth,” one political analyst commented.
Sources claim that during a reportedly tense meeting held at State House and chaired by President Yoweri Museveni, concerns were raised regarding corruption allegations and the public image of Parliament. According to individuals said to have attended the meeting, the President was angered by reports surrounding the Speaker’s lifestyle and allegedly called for investigations into the source of her wealth. However, no official government statement has yet confirmed these claims.
There has also been speculation within political circles that Defence Minister Jacob Oboth-Oboth could emerge as a possible replacement should changes be made in parliamentary leadership. Fueling further speculation, Gen Muhoozi posted messages on X suggesting major leadership changes could soon take place in Parliament. His remarks triggered widespread debate online, with supporters of the ruling establishment interpreting them as a sign of deepening frustration with corruption and excessive spending among top officials.
Several senior figures aligned to the Speaker, including media aides Chris Obore and Joseph Sabiiti, were reportedly seen clearing offices on Friday morning, although there has been no official communication confirming any dismissals. Sources additionally allege that Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa could also be affected should a wider shake-up in parliamentary leadership occur.
Meanwhile, several officials within the ruling establishment and the Patriotic League of Uganda, including PLU’s Robert Kabanda, have publicly criticized corruption, extravagance, and misuse of public resources within government institutions, particularly Parliament. While political pressure appears to be mounting, the future of the Speaker and her deputy remains uncertain pending any formal communication from State House or the ruling party leadership.
