Former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among is reportedly isolated, anxious and under mounting pressure after all official parliamentary vehicles assigned to her residence in Nakasero were withdrawn and returned to Parliament, marking an unprecedented moment in Uganda’s political history.Sources within Parliament told The Investigator that the vehicles, which had remained stationed at the Speaker’s official residence, were quietly removed on the orders of parliamentary administration. The move comes even before Among has formally handed over office, making her the first Speaker in Uganda’s history to lose access to official vehicles prior to completing the official transition process.
Officials familiar with the development say the withdrawal of the fleet signals the speed and seriousness with which the establishment is seeking to distance itself from the embattled former Speaker following weeks of intense political turmoil and internal wrangles within the ruling establishment. A senior parliamentary official confirmed that all government vehicles attached to the office had been recalled.“The vehicles have been returned to the Parliament parking yard as part of the transition process. Once a new office bearer is confirmed, new allocations are made according to the established administrative procedures,” a senior official in the Directorate of Transport at Parliament said.
The official declined to comment further on the political implications surrounding the decision but insisted the exercise was “administrative and procedural.”However, insiders close to the former Speaker describe a tense atmosphere at the Nakasero residence, with Among allegedly feeling abandoned by many of her once-loyal political allies.“She is alone and frightened. Many of the people who used to surround her have disappeared ever since the troubles intensified,” one source familiar with the developments said.
Eviction next
Sources also revealed that Among has formally been notified to vacate the Speaker’s official residence to pave way for renovations and preparations for the incoming occupant. The official residence, located in the upscale Nakasero neighborhood, has traditionally housed Speakers of Parliament during their tenure in office.According to insiders, the decision to remove Among from the residence earlier than expected was partly influenced by fears surrounding alleged traditional rituals and accusations of witchcraft that have recently dominated political discussions among senior government officials.
“She has to vacate that house for renovation before the new Speaker comes in,” a highly placed source said on condition of anonymity. “There were concerns raised about possible traditional rituals and the need to spiritually cleanse and reorganize the residence before another occupant takes over.”
Juju fears
The allegations emerged from what sources described as a dramatic closed-door meeting at State House chaired by President Yoweri Museveni. The meeting reportedly brought together several senior political figures to discuss the growing tensions within Parliament and the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).Multiple sources familiar with the meeting claim that the issue of witchcraft and spiritual attacks unexpectedly dominated parts of the discussion.
According to insiders, Among allegedly attributed many of her political troubles and recent misfortunes to alleged witchcraft orchestrated by her predecessor, Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga. The accusations reportedly shocked several attendees at the meeting.“Among accused Kadaga of sending spiritual attacks against her and frustrating her leadership,” a source briefed on the proceedings claimed. “She reportedly said some of the problems she has faced were not ordinary political disagreements.”But Kadaga, a veteran politician and former Speaker herself, is said to have rejected the accusations and instead turned the blame back on Among. Sources claim Kadaga accused her successor of attempting to bewitch members of her family and inner circle during the height of their political disagreements.
The sensational claims have since become the subject of intense discussion within political circles, exposing the deep mistrust and bitter rivalry that has existed between the two powerful women over the years.Although none of the parties involved has publicly commented on the allegations, insiders say security and administrative officials are taking the matter seriously enough to ensure an expedited transition at the Speaker’s residence.“The government does not want to take chances,” another source said. “There is a desire to completely reset the residence before the next Speaker occupies it.”
Political analysts say the developments reflect the dramatic fall of a once-powerful political figure who until recently commanded enormous influence both within Parliament and the ruling party structures.Among rose rapidly through the political ranks and became one of the most influential figures in government after replacing Kadaga as Speaker. Her tenure, however, became increasingly controversial amid accusations of abuse of office, corruption allegations and bitter factional fights inside Parliament.
In recent months, the political pressure surrounding her leadership intensified, with critics accusing her administration of high-handedness and poor management of parliamentary affairs. Several scandals and public disagreements further weakened her standing among senior party figures.
Speedy transition
The withdrawal of official vehicles and the directive to vacate the residence are now being interpreted by many observers as symbolic signs that the political establishment has already moved on.At Parliament, some staff members privately expressed shock at the speed of the transition. “It is unusual for a Speaker to lose access to official facilitation before formally handing over office,” one parliamentary employee noted. “Usually there is a more gradual transition.”Others, however, defended the move as necessary to protect government property and ensure a smooth handover process.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding her future, Among has remained largely silent publicly, avoiding direct engagement with the media as speculation over her next political move continues to grow.Sources close to her insist she remains defiant and believes she has been unfairly targeted by rivals within the political establishment. However, with official privileges rapidly disappearing and allies keeping their distance, the former Speaker now finds herself navigating one of the most difficult periods of her political career.
As the transition unfolds, attention is increasingly turning toward who will occupy the powerful office next and whether the turbulence surrounding Among’s exit will leave lasting scars within Uganda’s political landscape.
