Kamutur Village, Bukedea – August 14, 2023: In an unprecedented show of political clout, the Rt. Hon. Anita Among Annet Magogo, the current Speaker of the Ugandan Parliament, has etched her name in the annals of Ugandan politics by playing host to over 300 Members of Parliament (MPs) for a lavish three-day ‘thanksgiving’ celebration at her opulent residence.
This historic gathering marked the first time a Speaker of the Ugandan Parliament has orchestrated such an event, showcasing Among’s growing influence in the region’s political landscape. The meticulously planned extravaganza kicked off with a flourish, as Among and her dedicated team arranged for comprehensive logistics, including fuel and group transportation, to ensure the seamless transition of MPs to her sprawling estate.
The palpable excitement and fervor exhibited by the attending parliamentarians mirrored the anticipation one would expect before a major presidential address or a crucial National Resistance Movement Organization (NRMO) gathering.
Notably, even the upper echelons of the parliamentary hierarchy, including her deputy Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, embraced the occasion with unwavering dedication, leaving no room for absence or complacency. The meticulously organized event was held at Among’s exquisite palace residence in Kamutur Village, Bukedea, which became the epicenter of political activity during the three-day affair.
This grand spectacle further solidified the claim made by Among’s ardent supporters that she is poised to emerge as a formidable political force, often referred to as the new ‘King’ maker of Eastern Uganda. This assertion is widely interpreted as a challenge to the long-standing influence of former Speaker and First Deputy Prime Minister of Uganda, Hon. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, who also holds the prestigious portfolio of Minister for East African Community Affairs.
Despite Kadaga’s loss of the speakership mandate, her enduring control over political appointments within the region remains unchallenged. This dynamic has fueled an undercurrent of rivalry and power struggle between Kadaga and Among, which, until now, had largely operated in the shadows. The lavish ‘thanksgiving’ event marked the official commencement of this politically charged contest.
Addressing the assembled dignitaries, Among emphasized her bond with the people of Bukedea, stating, “Don’t think that the people of Bukedea don’t love me. They do love me. We have decided to have an exclusive interaction with our members of parliament.” Her words carried a profound resonance, reflecting her determination to carve out a unique place for herself within the complex tapestry of Ugandan politics.
In a symbolic act of allegiance, Among extended an invitation to the Senior Presidential Advisor on Special Operations, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba. Gen. Kainerugaba, a prominent figurehead of the Muhoozi Kainerugaba (MK) movement, had hitherto maintained a discreet presence at such events. However, his appearance at the ‘thanksgiving’ celebration marked a significant turning point in Among’s public association with the MK movement.
As a precursor to this event, Gen. Muhoozi had graced the launch of a notable initiative at Kongunga Primary School in Kachumbala County, Bukedea District. The culmination of this endeavor is set to be a grand bazaar at Soroti Sports Grounds, scheduled for August 15. Among’s involvement in these affairs underscores her strategic alignment with the MK movement for what she described as a shared belief “in the name of the father, son, and the holy spirit.”
Nevertheless, while the recent developments have undoubtedly bolstered Hon. Among’s political profile, the road to ascendancy remains fraught with challenges. Winning the endorsement of influential figures such as NRMO Eastern Vice Chairman, Hon. Capt. Mike Mukula, has proven to be an elusive endeavor. Mukula’s absence from Among’s activities serves as a reminder that the journey to the Kadaga throne is far from guaranteed.
In conclusion, Hon. Anita Among’s remarkable ‘thanksgiving’ bash has not only left an indelible mark on Uganda’s political landscape but has also initiated a new chapter in the rivalry between her and Hon. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga. As Eastern Uganda witnesses a shifting balance of power, Among’s actions have set the stage for a contest that will undoubtedly shape the region’s political trajectory for years to come
