Tragic Fall or Foul Play? Detectives Dive into Deeper Questions, Probing the Death of Vipers Footballer Abubakar Lawal

Kampala, Uganda: Uganda Police detectives are still grappling with the mysterious death of a Nigerian professional footballer, Abubakar Lawal, a player with Vipers Sports Club, who allegedly fell from the third floor of Voice Mall Shopping Arcade in Kajjansi on the morning of February 24, 2025.

Breaking the news later in the day, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police, stated that detectives at Kajjansi Police Division had launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Lawal’s fatal fall. Preliminary reports suggest that Lawal arrived at the shopping mall in his vehicle, a black Toyota Harrier with registration number UBQ 695G, intending to meet his friend, a Tanzanian national identified as Omary Naima.

Naima, who had been residing in room 416 of the mall since February 20, told police that she left Lawal in the room preparing tea for breakfast and proceeded to the game center within the mall. Shortly after, at around 8:00am, Lawal reportedly fell from the balcony. He was rushed to Entebbe Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Unanswered Questions

While initial findings indicate a fall from the building, the police are considering various possibilities, including the likelihood of foul play, suicide, or a tragic accident. The police recovered several personal items from the deceased, including two smartphones, a pair of open shoes, headsets, a training kit, and chargers, all of which were found inside his black backpack.

The investigators are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the mall to establish the movements of both the deceased and Naima prior to the incident. Law enforcement officers are also questioning Naima, the Mall staff, and potential eyewitnesses to ascertain what truly transpired in those final moments.

Was Lawal Alone in the Room?

One of the key questions detectives are trying to answer is whether Lawal was indeed alone in the room when the incident occurred and who, exactly is Naima to Lawal! Naima’s statement indicates that she had left the footballer in the room, but investigators are exploring whether any other individuals had access to the apartment at the time of the tragedy.

Further complicating the matter, there is speculation over whether Lawal might have been involved in an altercation before his fall. Police have requested a postmortem examination to determine if there were any physical injuries inconsistent with a fall, such as defensive wounds or signs of struggle.

Friends and Club Officials Express Shock

Teammates and officials at Vipers Sports Club were left in shock at the news of Lawal’s sudden death. The club released a brief statement expressing their deep sorrow and calling for a thorough investigation into the matter. “Abubakar Lawal was an integral part of our team, both on and off the pitch. We urge authorities to establish the truth behind his tragic passing,” the statement read.

Football analysts and fans have also taken to social media, demanding justice for Lawal. Many are calling on law enforcement to ensure that the circumstances of his death are not swept under the rug. “A young, healthy footballer does not just fall off a balcony. We need clear answers,” one user tweeted.

ASP Owoyesigyire urged the public to refrain from speculation and allow law enforcement to conduct a thorough investigation. “We understand the concerns surrounding this case, and we assure everyone that we are leaving no stone unturned,” he said.
