KAMPALA, Uganda: The sudden and mysterious death of the 23yr-old Martha Ahumuza Murari at Mezo Noir, a popular nightclub in Kololo, Kampala, has sent shockwaves across the city, raising numerous questions and concerns. As investigations unfold, various accounts and speculations continue to emerge regarding the events leading up to her tragic demise.
On the night of March 20th 2025, Martha, in the company of three girlfriends, reportedly left another bar in Kololo around 2:00a.m. to meet her boyfriend, Edward Mugabo, a cashier at Mezo Noir. The group drank together, with Martha consuming only four shots of Jägermeister. At about 3:30 a.m., Martha and Mugabo moved to the manager’s office.
What transpired next remains unclear, much as encrypted reports insinuate of an `adult talk` having taken place in-there. Plainly, reports only suggest that Martha suddenly collapsed. In a frantic response, Mugabo reportedly contacted his brother, Joseph Kalenzi and together, they reportedly transported Martha to Kampala Hospital, where she was placed on life support. Tragically, she did not make it back to life!
The Investigations
Detectives from Kira Road Police Station swiftly launched an investigation, treating the case as a suspected poisoning. Both Mugabo and Kalenzi were detained to aid in the inquiries. Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango confirmed their detention, stating that their cooperation was crucial in piecing together the events leading to Martha’s death.
However, emerging but yet unconfirmed postmortem reports suggest that Martha may have succumbed to natural causes, via a ruptured aneurysm. Aneurysms, which occur when a weakened blood vessel bursts, can be triggered by factors such as high blood pressure, smoking, alcohol or drug abuse and or, genetic predispositions, according to Doctors.
Mugabo and Martha were well-known as an enviable couple among friends and family, with their relationship appearing solid. If authorities choose to pursue Mugabo as a prime suspect, they would need to establish undeniable evidence and motive, possibly under the category of a crime of passion, a crime committed in the heat of the moment due to intense emotions like jealousy and, or anger rather than malice aforethought.
Uncontented Family
Martha’s father, Seth Murari, remains inconsolable and determined to uncover the truth. Speaking at her requiem service at All Saints Church in Kampala, he vowed to exhaust all possible avenues to identify “those responsible,” expressing disbelief at his daughter’s untimely demise. Murari disclosed that doctors had identified a crack in Martha’s skull and bleeding in her brain, further complicating the theory of a natural death. The family now anxiously awaits an official police report to clarify the true cause of death.
In the wake of the tragedy, social media platforms went abuzz with speculation and misinformation. The Murari family has urged the public to refrain from spreading rumors and allow investigative authorities to conduct their work without interference. Meanwhile, the public remains on edge, awaiting answers to the questions surrounding Martha’s final moments.
Mezo Nior Under Scrutiny
Nestled in the heart of Kololo on Plot 8 Somero Road, Mezo Noir has long been a beacon of luxurious nightlife in Kampala. The venue, renowned for its Mediterranean and continental cuisine, could accommodate up to 400 guests and was praised for its high-end ambiance and first-class service. Operating from morning until dawn, it is the go-to spot for the city’s elite and partygoers alike.
However, Martha’s death has cast a shadow over the establishment, raising concerns about safety and accountability within Kampala’s nightlife scenes. In response, even before police cordoned it off, Mezo Noir management announced a temporary closure, citing “unforeseen circumstances.” The sudden shutdown only fueled speculation, leaving many to wonder whether the club has more to hide than it lets on.
Before this tragic incident, Mezo Noir enjoyed glowing online reviews, with patrons praising its impeccable service and atmosphere. However, as its future now hangs in balance, questions about its ownership and operations have begun to surface. Who are the real masterminds behind this splendid establishment? What role, if any, do they play in the unfolding saga? Watch this space for all the answers that there is.
