ALOIKIN OPOLOJE OUT ON BAIL: ‘Cabbage Banger’ Pays Sh500,000 As Supporters Celebrate Her Release From Prison

Ugandan activist Aloikin Opoloje, popularly known on social media as the “Cabbage Banger”, has been granted bail, triggering celebrations among her supporters, who welcomed her release from prison and promised to stand with her as she returns home.

Under the bail terms announced following the court proceedings, Opoloje was granted cash bail of Sh500,000, while her sureties were ordered to execute non-cash bonds of Sh1 million.

Her release drew immediate reactions from Ugandans on social media, with supporters celebrating her freedom, thanking those who helped secure her release and expressing excitement about her return to public life.

Among those welcoming her was activist and former Makerere University lecturer Dr Stella Nyanzi, who announced the development on X, formerly Twitter, describing Opoloje as the “Cabbage Banger” and celebrating her return from prison. “The Cabbage Banger is out of prison – released on bail of 500,000/= UGX,” Nyanzi wrote.

“Welcome home @AloikinOpoloje! We join your baby, your mum and your loved ones in welcoming you back home.”

Nyanzi also thanked those who had supported Opoloje during her incarceration, particularly the people who stood as sureties, comrades who attended the court proceedings and those who visited her in prison. “Many thanks to all the people who stood as her sureties, comrades who filled the dirty court room and those who visited her in prison,” she added.

The message captured the relief among Opoloje’s supporters, who had followed her detention and rallied around her family and legal efforts to secure her temporary freedom.

Social media erupts over release

Opoloje’s release quickly became a moment of celebration among her supporters, with the bail announcement drawing attention to the role social media has played in mobilising solidarity around activists facing criminal proceedings.

The phrase “coming back to kick cabbage”, associated with the announcement of her release, added a defiant tone to the celebrations, signalling that supporters expect her to resume her outspoken public presence.

The nickname “Cabbage Banger” has become a recognisable label among her online followers, who use it when discussing her activism and public controversies. Her release therefore attracted more than routine reactions to a bail decision, becoming a rallying point for people who regard her as a symbol of defiance.

Nyanzi’s message was particularly significant because it went beyond announcing the court’s decision. It recognised the practical and emotional support provided by Opoloje’s family, friends and fellow activists throughout her time in custody.

The mention of her baby and mother also brought a personal dimension to the announcement, reminding supporters that detention affects not only the person facing charges but also their immediate family.

For many of those celebrating, the granting of bail represented an opportunity for Opoloje to reunite with her loved ones while continuing to deal with the criminal proceedings against her outside prison, subject to the applicable court requirements.

However, bail does not amount to an acquittal or the termination of a criminal case. It allows an accused person to be released from custody while the case continues, subject to the conditions imposed by the court.

Bail terms

The bail terms announced for Opoloje required her to pay Sh500,000 in cash, while each of her sureties was subject to a non-cash bond of Sh1 million, according to the information provided following the proceedings.

Cash bail is money deposited with the court as security for an accused person’s attendance during subsequent proceedings. A non-cash surety bond is a commitment by a person accepted by the court to ensure that the accused complies with the court’s requirements.

The amounts involved are distinct: Opoloje’s Sh500,000 cash bail was not the same as the Sh1 million non-cash bond required of her sureties.

The granting of bail also does not determine whether an accused person is guilty or innocent. That question remains for the court to resolve through the legal process.

Details of the charges against Opoloje, the court that granted bail, the date of her next appearance and any additional conditions were not contained in the initial announcement of her release. Those details would be necessary to provide a complete account of the case and its legal background.

Nevertheless, the immediate response from her supporters showed that the outcome was regarded as a significant development after her time in custody.

Nyanzi thanks supporters

Nyanzi’s reaction highlighted the collective effort behind Opoloje’s release, particularly the willingness of supporters to attend court and provide the necessary sureties.

Standing surety can be an important part of the bail process, as courts require people who can undertake to secure an accused person’s attendance. The involvement of supporters can therefore make a practical difference in enabling an accused person to meet the conditions imposed for release.

Nyanzi also acknowledged those who visited Opoloje in prison, recognising the importance of maintaining contact with detainees and supporting their families during difficult periods.

Her message reflected a broader pattern in Uganda’s political and civic space, where social media platforms are used to publicise arrests, mobilise legal and financial support, and share developments in cases involving activists and other public figures.

X has increasingly become a platform through which activists announce court outcomes and rally supporters around people facing detention or prosecution. Such posts can spread news quickly, although details of criminal cases still need to be verified against court records and official statements.

For Opoloje’s supporters, the bail decision offered an opportunity to celebrate a temporary return to freedom while keeping attention on the legal process that remains ahead.

Return to public life

The reference to “coming back to kick cabbage” suggested that supporters expect Opoloje to return to the public arena with the same boldness associated with her online identity.

The celebratory language also carried a message of solidarity: that her detention had not erased the support she enjoys among at least some sections of Uganda’s online community.

Nyanzi’s welcome-home message, meanwhile, framed the release as a moment for family reunion as much as a public victory. By mentioning Opoloje’s child and mother, she placed the focus on the people who had waited for her return.

The coming days will show whether Opoloje resumes her previous level of public engagement and how her release affects the proceedings against her. Her freedom on bail remains conditional on compliance with the court’s requirements and attendance at future hearings.

For now, her supporters are celebrating the end of her immediate stay in prison, thanking those who helped secure her release and looking forward to her reunion with her family.

The central legal point remains that Opoloje has been released on bail, not cleared of any charges that may be before the court. Her case, including the reasons for her detention and the next steps in the proceedings, requires further confirmation from court records and the parties involved.
