Uganda Airlines has unveiled two new African destinations—Accra, Ghana, and Kigali, Rwanda—in a major expansion of its continental network, a move government officials and business leaders say will deepen regional integration, boost trade, promote tourism and position Uganda as a key aviation hub in East and West Africa.

The announcement was made during a launch ceremony at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel, where government officials, Members of Parliament, diplomats, aviation stakeholders and business leaders gathered to witness another milestone in the national carrier’s rapid growth.
The airline confirmed that direct flights to Accra will commence on October 27, 2026, while daily flights to Kigali will begin on November 18, 2026.
The expansion comes as Uganda Airlines continues implementing its strategy of connecting Uganda directly to key commercial, tourism and diplomatic destinations across Africa and beyond.
Strengthening Uganda’s Aviation Ambitions
Speaking at the launch, Works and Transport Minister Fred Byamukama described the new routes as another vote of confidence in Uganda’s national carrier and a significant step toward transforming Entebbe International Airport into a regional aviation hub.

“The expansion of Uganda Airlines into Accra and Kigali demonstrates our commitment to improving regional connectivity and supporting Uganda’s economic transformation,” Byamukama said.
“Air transport is more than moving passengers. It facilitates trade, investment, tourism, cultural exchange and business opportunities. Every new destination we open creates fresh opportunities for Ugandans.”
The minister said government remains committed to investing in aviation infrastructure, modernizing Entebbe International Airport and supporting Uganda Airlines as it competes in the increasingly competitive African aviation market.

He added that direct flights would eliminate unnecessary transit connections, reduce travel time and lower transport costs for passengers and businesses.
A Strategic Move into West Africa
The introduction of direct flights to Accra marks Uganda Airlines’ latest push into West Africa, one of the continent’s fastest-growing business regions.

Accra serves as a major gateway to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), offering significant opportunities for Ugandan exporters, investors and entrepreneurs seeking access to new markets.
The route is expected to facilitate trade in agricultural products, manufactured goods and services while also strengthening diplomatic and commercial ties between Uganda and Ghana.
For years, passengers travelling between Uganda and Ghana have relied on connecting flights through Addis Ababa, Nairobi or Kigali.
The new direct service is expected to significantly shorten travel times while improving convenience for both business and leisure travellers.
Kigali Route Deepens Regional Integration
Uganda Airlines also announced the launch of daily flights to Kigali, further strengthening ties between Uganda and Rwanda.
The route comes at a time when relations between the two neighbouring countries have improved considerably, leading to increased cross-border trade, tourism and movement of people.
Daily flights are expected to complement existing road transport while offering faster travel for business executives, tourists, diplomats and regional organisations operating within the East African Community.
Industry observers believe the Kigali service will also improve onward connectivity to destinations served by Rwanda’s aviation network.
CEO Hails Major Milestone
Uganda Airlines acting Chief Executive Officer and consultant Girma Wake described the launch as another important chapter in the airline’s growth journey.

“Today’s announcement reflects our continued commitment to connecting Uganda to key African destinations while delivering reliable, safe and efficient air transport,” he said.
“Accra opens an important West African market for Uganda, while Kigali strengthens regional connectivity within the East African Community.”
She noted that the airline continues to evaluate additional destinations based on passenger demand, commercial viability and Uganda’s broader economic interests.
“Our vision is to build an airline that supports national development while providing world-class services to our passengers.”
Bamuturaki thanked the Government of Uganda for its continued support, saying sustained investment has enabled the airline to steadily expand its route network.
Parliament Pledges Continued Support
Chairperson of Parliament’s Budget Committee, Hon. Amos Kankunda, welcomed the airline’s expansion, describing it as a strategic investment that will generate long-term economic returns.

“These new routes will strengthen regional connectivity, promote trade and investment, expand market access for Ugandan businesses and boost tourism, all of which will contribute meaningfully to the growth of our economy,” Kankunda said.
He reaffirmed Parliament’s commitment to supporting policies that strengthen Uganda Airlines and improve national transport infrastructure.
“A vibrant aviation sector is essential to driving sustainable economic growth, creating jobs and positioning Uganda as a competitive regional hub,” he added.
Kankunda congratulated the airline’s management and staff for achieving another significant milestone in expanding Uganda’s international footprint.
Economic Opportunities
Analysts say the two new destinations are expected to deliver multiple economic benefits.
Exporters will gain faster access to new markets, particularly in West Africa, while importers are expected to benefit from improved cargo connectivity.
Tourism operators also anticipate increased visitor arrivals from both Ghana and Rwanda as Uganda continues promoting its wildlife, cultural heritage and conference tourism.
The routes are equally expected to facilitate government engagements, educational exchanges and private-sector partnerships.Business organisations have long advocated for direct connectivity to reduce the high cost of travel across Africa.
Growing Route Network
Since its revival, Uganda Airlines has steadily expanded its operations across Africa while also launching long-haul services.
The airline now serves several destinations across East, Central, Southern and West Africa and continues exploring new opportunities in line with Uganda’s National Development Plan.
Government officials believe the continued expansion strengthens Uganda’s competitiveness within the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which seeks to boost intra-African trade by reducing barriers between member states.
Public Reaction
The announcement generated widespread excitement on social media, with many Ugandans describing the new routes as evidence of the airline’s growing maturity.
Among those commenting was political commentator Buhaanda bwa’RUTUNGU, who linked the Kigali route to the recent improvement in relations between Uganda and Rwanda.
He noted that following the recent visit to Rwanda by Chief of Defence Forces Muhoozi Kainerugaba, accompanied by journalist Andrew Mwenda, Uganda Airlines had now announced Kigali as one of its newest destinations.
The commentator further recalled that previous engagements between the two countries contributed to the reopening of the Uganda-Rwanda border after nearly three years of closure, arguing that renewed diplomatic cooperation continues to yield economic dividends.
While the airline has not attributed the new route to any specific political engagement, observers agree that improved bilateral relations have created an enabling environment for increased business, tourism and air travel between the neighbouring countries.
Looking Ahead
With Accra and Kigali joining its expanding network, Uganda Airlines continues positioning itself as a key player in Africa’s aviation industry.
The additional routes not only enhance passenger convenience but also reinforce Uganda’s ambitions of becoming a regional centre for trade, investment and tourism.
For travellers, exporters and investors alike, the launch represents more than the addition of two destinations—it signals Uganda’s growing confidence in connecting its economy to the rest of Africa through a modern and expanding national carrier.
