The year 2022 has been musically dull and unimpressive on the Ugandan local music scene. This, as many of the top artistes preferred to take a back sit whilst a new or post-Covid-19 artistes’ generation took center stage. It would be a broad day insult to associate this year with the likes of Moses Ssali aka Bebe Cool, who must be ashamed of having shown up with songs like; Nyege-Nyege, Tic Tok ft Lito and Sheila Gashumba, Believe in yourself ft El Cambio and Joanita.
Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine tried to rise up to the year with ‘Nteredde’, a collabo done with his singing partner Nubian li. Nonetheless, one many music analysts ought to have advised him to instead concentrated on his new found ‘political’ muscle other than deliver half-baked sounds.
Celebrated Ugandan music machine and wonder, Joseph Mayanja aka Jose Chameleon, clawed into the year with the re-release of his ‘Forever’ song that he had outted at the tail end of the previous year, receiving very positive reception cupped by the remix of his vintage ‘Kuma Obwesigwa’.
Without ‘Forever’ Chameleon would have lived on his past chart bursting songs and concert performing gigs or tours overseas. The incredibly talented Juliana Kanyomozi, only managed to stay relevant with a concert that she held in the middle of the year while Iryn Namubiru, chose charity instead of music.
Controversial Winnie Nakanwagi aka Nwagi, who in her own right is obscenely musically talented, and a stage marvel, chose to keep in the fray by ‘fighting’ with promoters and fans than deliver as she has often done. Being tempted to bring Alexander Bagonza, who had pitched himself into one of the most promising and relevant acts, would be suicidal as he chose brand ambassadorship and body building, to studio audio production. While other female singers we had high expectations in, like Sheebah Karungi with ‘Muwoomya’, and Namukwaya Hajara aka Spice Diana had ‘Siri Regular’, ‘Boss’ chose to chase other business ventures in Thailand.
With the absence of such top artistes among the many others on the list of the already established cream of the Ugandan music crop, Ugandans were left without option but to listen to Post-Covid Bubble gum music from new ‘social media’ created artistes. How would one describe songs like ‘Lusuku Lwa cement’ by Ronald Alimpa, topping several music charts and lists!
Then the emergence of, and, appeal for a new brand of music mixing known as ‘Binyanyanyanya’ that has since gained a cult following, under its superintendents DJ Suuna Ben, Mbaziira Tony and its original architect Muteesa Pro, who is now working with Next Media. The only solace Ugandans could take pride in was in Swangz Avenue’s Priscilla Zawedde aka Azawi with songs like; ‘Bamutute’ and ‘Feeling’ among several others that have catapulted her to Uganda’s best artiste of this year.
Gerson Wabuyi aka Gravity Omutujju has graduated with honors thanks to his most popular song of the year ‘Tusimbude’. However, the kudos for Uganda’s best song of the year go to David Lutalo with his mammoth song ‘Kabisi Kandagala’. As Ugandans usher in the new year 2023, there is hope that the local music industry will have better and quality music to offer as most of them begin to settle after the 2-year Covid Restrictions ‘Dead’ Years. Happy 2023.
