The political future of Anita Among has become the subject of intense debate following growing speculation that the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) may not front her as its preferred candidate for Speaker in the 12th Parliament.
Although the party has not yet issued a formal statement confirming her rejection, political insiders claim influential figures within the establishment are pushing for a new face to lead Parliament amid mounting public criticism over corruption, extravagance, and accountability within the August House. The developments place Among at a critical political crossroads.
Observers say one possible option available to the Speaker is to defy the party position and contest for the speakership as an independent candidate, a path previously taken by former Speaker Rebecca Kadaga after losing endorsement from party organs in 2021.
Kadaga eventually lost the contest to Among despite mounting a spirited campaign backed by sections of the ruling party and opposition legislators. However, analysts argue that Among’s situation could be different.
Over the past several years, the Speaker has built a strong political network within Parliament, with many MPs believed to be loyal to her leadership style and political influence. Her critics argue that financial muscle and patronage have helped consolidate her support, while her allies insist she has simply maintained strong working relationships with legislators across political divides. “Among remains a very influential figure in Parliament. If she chooses to stand as an independent, she cannot easily be written off,” a political analyst said.
Sources within political circles claim the Speaker has been engaged in consultations with close allies amid fears of an internal party fallout. At the same time, pressure continues to mount over allegations surrounding her lavish lifestyle and wealth accumulation, accusations she has consistently denied. Calls for investigations into the source of wealth of some top government officials have recently intensified, particularly following public outrage over luxury spending by political leaders.
Political commentators say if state agencies such as the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and the Inspectorate of Government (IGG) were to open formal investigations, the Speaker could face a prolonged political and legal battle. However, no criminal charges have been announced against Among, and there is currently no official indication that she is under prosecution.
For now, the Speaker remains publicly silent on the growing speculation, but insiders say the coming weeks could shape not only her political survival, but also the future power dynamics within Uganda’s Parliament.
