A cloud of grief and anger has engulfed the family of Babirye Lydia Sengendo after the woman who was reported missing on Wednesday was found dead in Kakiri despite desperate efforts by her relatives to save her life.The heartbreaking discovery has sparked fresh concerns over the growing wave of kidnappings and violent crime, with relatives accusing the killers of acting with shocking cruelty after allegedly collecting millions of shillings from the victim’s family.
According to family members, Babirye was last seen at Busunju where she boarded a taxi on Wednesday. What initially appeared to be a normal journey soon turned into a nightmare when she disappeared without a trace.Relatives spent hours calling her phone and searching for her in hospitals, police stations and among friends, but there was no sign of the missing woman.
The situation took a sinister turn when unknown individuals reportedly contacted the family claiming to be holding Babirye captive. The kidnappers allegedly demanded a staggering Shs19 million ransom in exchange for her freedom.With fears growing that her life was in danger, the devastated family scrambled to raise money from relatives, friends and well-wishers.
Despite financial challenges, the family managed to mobilize Shs8 million, hoping the payment would convince the captors to release their loved one.However, the family says the money was paid in vain. Instead of returning Babirye safely home, the suspected kidnappers allegedly murdered her and dumped her body in Kakiri, sending shockwaves through the community. “We did everything we could to save her,” a grieving family member said.
“We begged for mercy. We raised money and followed the instructions we were given because we believed she would come back alive. It is painful that after all that, they still killed her.”Another relative described the deceased as a caring and hardworking woman whose death has left an irreplaceable gap in the family.
“She was loved by many people. We have lost a sister, a daughter and a friend. We want justice and we want those responsible to be arrested,” the relative said through tears.
POLICE SPEAK OUT
Police have confirmed the tragic development and say investigations into the circumstances surrounding Babirye’s death are ongoing. According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, security agencies are actively pursuing leads that could help identify and apprehend the suspects behind the crime.”We are investigating the circumstances under which the deceased disappeared and was later found dead. We urge members of the public to remain calm as investigations continue,” Owoyesigyire said.
He further appealed to anyone with information that may assist investigators to come forward and cooperate with police.The police spokesperson noted that detectives are examining communication records, witness statements and other evidence that could shed light on the victim’s final movements.Residents of Busunju and Kakiri have also been urged to share any information that may help investigators piece together the timeline leading to the gruesome killing.

News of Babirye’s death spread rapidly across social media, where Ugandans expressed outrage and sorrow over the incident.Many questioned how criminals could allegedly receive money from a victim’s family and still proceed to kill her.
Others called for tougher measures against kidnapping syndicates that continue to terrorize innocent citizens.Security experts have repeatedly warned members of the public to remain vigilant, especially when travelling alone or responding to suspicious calls demanding money.
The incident has once again highlighted the emotional torture families endure when loved ones disappear under mysterious circumstances.For Babirye’s family, the pain is compounded by the fact that they believed the ransom payment would save her life.
Instead, they are now preparing for burial arrangements while struggling to come to terms with the shocking loss.”We never imagined we would be receiving her body instead of welcoming her home,” a relative said.”Every phone call gave us hope. Every minute we waited we believed she would return. Now all we have are memories.”
CALLS FOR JUSTICE
Community leaders and residents have joined the family in demanding swift justice. Several residents described the killing as barbaric and called upon security agencies to intensify efforts against criminal gangs operating in and around Kampala and Wakiso districts.
As investigators continue their work, mourners have gathered at the family’s home to comfort relatives and pay tribute to the deceased.Friends remembered Babirye as a humble woman who always put others first and was known for her kindness and generosity.
Her death now joins a growing list of criminal incidents that have left many Ugandans worried about their safety.For the grieving family, however, the focus remains on ensuring that those responsible are brought before the courts.
“They took her from us in the most cruel way possible,” a family member said.”We cannot bring her back, but we pray that the people who did this are arrested and punished.
