The walls are finally closing in on the killers of Rugby Cranes and Black Pirates rugby star Sydney Gondodyo.Police have confirmed that eight suspects are now in custody in connection with the brutal mob attack that claimed the life of the celebrated rugby player, sending shockwaves across Uganda’s sporting fraternity and reigniting debate about the growing culture of mob justice.

The arrests come days after disturbing videos and photographs surfaced online showing Gondodyo being viciously attacked by a group of men who accused him of theft.According to Police Spokesperson ACP Rusoke Kituuma, investigators are still hunting for additional suspects captured in the footage.

“We have now a total of eight in custody and when the investigations are done they will be arraigned before court,” Kituuma said. The development has been welcomed by thousands of Ugandans who have been demanding swift action against those responsible for the player’s death.

HUNT FOR KILLERS CONTINUES

Police say the operation to track down suspects is far from over. Kituuma revealed that detectives from Kampala Metropolitan Police have been analysing mobile phone records, CCTV footage and videos shared on social media to identify everyone who participated in the fatal assault.

“The hunt for suspects is ongoing and we are glad that the public has taken a keen interest in identifying them,” Kituuma said. He added that those seen actively participating in the attack would all face the law. “They cannot hide forever.”The police spokesperson warned Ugandans against taking the law into their own hands, saying participation in mob justice can result in murder charges.

KEY SUSPECT IDENTIFIED

As investigations gather momentum, one of the most wanted suspects has been identified as Mugwisa Obed, a boda boda rider said to operate near Froebel Road in Ntinda. His photographs have been widely circulated online by activists and concerned citizens.Several social media users have urged members of the public to share information regarding his whereabouts with Kiira Road Police Station.

Police have neither confirmed nor denied whether the suspect is among the eight already arrested. The circulation of photographs and videos has become a crucial tool in helping investigators track down those involved in the deadly assault.

A NATION IN MOURNING

The death of Gondodyo has left Uganda’s rugby fraternity devastated. The towering athlete was not only a Rugby Cranes star but also a respected player for Black Pirates Rugby Club, where teammates describe him as disciplined, hardworking and humble. Many Ugandans continue to struggle to comprehend how a national sports figure could be beaten to death in broad daylight while onlookers watched. Former RCC Herbert Anderson Burora expressed deep anguish over the tragedy.

“Death is an invisible monster. It makes life meaningless. Dreams buried, breadwinner buried, father buried, husband buried, rugby player buried. All buried in an incident that should not have happened,” Burora lamented.

In another emotional post, Burora questioned the mindset of the attackers. “One would think that muscles are meant to protect. Why would such a man capable of standing in the middle of a conflict and resolve it instead turn and use the same energy to end life?”His comments have resonated with many Ugandans who believe the attack represented a complete breakdown of humanity.

PUBLIC DEMANDS TOUGH ACTION

News of the arrests sparked a wave of reactions online, with many Ugandans calling for swift prosecution of all suspects. Petite Mukiga, one of the social media users following the case closely, welcomed the arrests.”Not a bad start. We need them arraigned before the public,” she wrote. Another user, Shabilz’s Engineer, praised police for taking action.

“Thanks for serving this beautiful country and we are extremely happy to hear such good news.”

Nickson Karuhura simply responded: “Thank you Afande.”

Others however demanded greater transparency. Ramah Kizito challenged investigators to produce the suspects. “First show us this one we believe,” he posted.Kateregga questioned why police had not publicly paraded those arrested. “You always parade petty suspects but it’s on these criminals where you draw the line?” he asked.

ANGER BOILS OVER

While many welcomed the arrests, others expressed outrage over the brutality of the killing.Prossy Nuwatuha posted an emotional reaction reflecting the anger felt by many Ugandans.

“Give them to us… we get to work and show them where Uganda is heading as a country.”

Human rights activists have however warned against retaliatory violence, insisting that suspects must face justice through the courts.Several civil society actors say Gondodyo’s death should serve as a wake-up call for authorities to intensify public education about the dangers of mob justice.

ACTIVISTS SPEAK OUT

Human rights campaigners say the tragedy highlights a growing crisis in Uganda’s urban centres where suspects are often punished before investigations are conducted. Many activists argue that citizens have increasingly lost confidence in lawful processes, leading to dangerous forms of vigilante justice.

One activist involved in tracking suspects said public cooperation has played a major role in identifying individuals captured in the viral footage. The activist noted that every person who participated in the attack, whether by physically assaulting Gondodyo or encouraging the violence, should be held accountable.

CALL FOR CIVIC EDUCATION

Media personality Daniel Lutaaya used the tragedy to call for widespread civic education.”The saddest thing is that the monsters who denied Sydney due process will be accorded due process,” Lutaaya wrote.

He argued that many Ugandans do not fully understand the law and the consequences of mob action. “We have a responsibility as citizens to educate these boda people. Every time you sit on one, it is an opportunity for you to give them some positive information.”

Lutaaya further said the country must work harder to prevent similar incidents.”Never again should a young family lose a father over mob justice.”

FAMILY AWAITS JUSTICE

As police continue making arrests, Gondodyo’s grieving family is still struggling to come to terms with the loss of a husband, father and provider.Friends say the rugby star leaves behind a young family that depended on him for support and guidance.

For now, the family’s focus remains on ensuring that everyone involved in the killing is brought to book. The eight arrests mark a significant breakthrough, but many Ugandans believe justice will only be served when every individual captured in the shocking videos stands before a court of law.

Until then, the haunting images of Sydney Gondodyo’s final moments will continue to remind the nation of the deadly consequences of mob justice and the urgent need to protect the rule of law. “They cannot hide forever,” ACP Rusoke Kituuma has vowed. For Gondodyo’s family, teammates and supporters, those words offer a glimmer of hope that justice may finally be within reach.
