Day one and two of the ongoing Netball World Cup 2023 in South Africa has produced remarkable performances, results and shockers as teams vie for Gold in South African City of Cape Town. Here we shall give you some of the tit bits of the tournament that features sixteen national netball teams.
She Cranes feared
The Silver Ferns sealed their second victory of the World Cup, weathering a stern test from Uganda who came the closest they’ve ever come to beating NZ. Interestingly, it was such intense game for defending champions New Zealand who pushed for the victory against a tough opponent like Uganda. Defending champion New Zealand and the world’s top-ranked side, Australia, kicked off their Netball World Cup 2023 campaigns with convincing victories while Uganda earned the host continent their first win of the tournament.
Play format
With 16 teams in this year’s tournament, the fixture was split into three sections; a preliminary group stage, a second re-shuffled group stage, and a final ‘placings and playoffs’ stage that will then lead up to the gold medal match. Teams play three times in an initial preliminary stage before being split into new pools for the second preliminary stage. The top three teams from Pools A and B move into Pool F, while the top three teams in Pools C and D form Pool G. The bottom team from each pool will come together in Pool E.
Biggest/Worst result
Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls began their Netball World Cup campaign with a resounding victory, defeating Sri Lanka 105-25 in their Pool C clash in Cape Town on Friday. The fourth-ranked Jamaican team displayed their dominance right from the start and didn’t ease up against their 15th-ranked opponents throughout the game.
Uganda 79-37 Singapore
A first Netball World Cup clash between Uganda and Singapore saw the African nation dominating from start to finish and walking away with a 79-37 victory. The She Cranes pulled away in the first quarter, enjoying 60 per cent of the possession in the period and surging ahead to a 22-9 lead. It was more of the same in the second quarter as the Ugandans proved quicker and slicker on all fronts with Haniisha Muhameed and Shadiah Nassanga doing the good business in the shooting ring.
Vocal Supporters
She Cranes are away but like it is, the team is enjoying the support in South Africa as Uganda’s supporters are being tagged as the vocal supporters in the crowd. In the opening game ultimate and comfortable victory for the east Africans, Ugandans were seen cheering up the girls against Singapore with a convincing result with player Margret Baagala crowned best player, or Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the match.
