A growing number of Members of Parliament believed to be close allies of Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among are reportedly gripped by fear as security agencies intensify investigations into alleged corruption and misuse of parliamentary funds.
Sources within security circles say several legislators may soon be summoned for questioning over their alleged dealings with the Speaker and the management of Parliament during her tenure. Among those reportedly under scrutiny are Akol Anthony, Ojara Martin Mapenduzi, Dicksons Kateshumbwa, Esther Anyakun, Dan Kimosho, Patrick Isiagi, Francis Adome, Patrick Aeku, Esther Afoyochan, Herbert Ariko and Moses Magogo.
The mounting pressure follows the dramatic arrest of newly sworn-in Masaka City Woman MP Justine Nameere, a known ally of the Speaker. Nameere was apprehended by security operatives during a thanksgiving rally in Masaka after allegedly mobilizing legislators against the ruling party’s preferred candidates for Speaker and Deputy Speaker.
Her arrest has reportedly sent shockwaves through Parliament, with many MPs now uncertain about who could be targeted next in what insiders are describing as a widening anti-corruption purge.
According to highly placed sources, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni recently held a lengthy meeting with Among during which concerns were raised about accountability and financial management within Parliament. The Speaker was reportedly asked to explain allegations that large sums of public funds could not be accounted for under her leadership.
Critics have long accused Parliament of operating under a cloud of secrecy and excessive expenditure. Concerns over the lavish lifestyles of some top officials have also fueled public anger. Among has frequently come under scrutiny from critics over her high-end lifestyle, including ownership of luxury vehicles such as a Range Rover, Mercedes-Benz models and a Rolls-Royce reportedly worth billions of shillings.
Some legislators have openly accused the Speaker of presiding over what they describe as a deeply compromised institution. Yoke Odria Alioni has been one of the most outspoken critics. During previous parliamentary debates, the Aringa South MP accused the Speaker of overseeing “a corrupt Parliament where accountability has collapsed.”
“We cannot continue pretending that everything is normal when Parliament itself has become a centre of questionable expenditure,” Alioni reportedly said during a heated session. “Ugandans deserve transparency from the leaders entrusted with public resources.” The outspoken legislator further warned that the growing mistrust in Parliament could damage the credibility of the institution if decisive action is not taken against those implicated in abuse of office.
Security agencies, including the Inspectorate of Government and the Criminal Investigations Directorate, are now said to be examining procurement records, classified expenditures and alleged misuse of parliamentary funds. Sources indicate that any official or legislator found culpable could face prosecution regardless of political affiliation.
Meanwhile, tension remains high within political circles as speculation grows over the possible fallout from the ongoing investigations. Several MPs linked to the Speaker are said to be avoiding public appearances and limiting political activities as uncertainty deepens over the next phase of the probe.
