Barely hours after Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja grabbed headlines by joining Office of the Prime Minister workers in an aerobics session at Nakasero Primary School grounds, another powerful government figure sent social media into overdrive with a fitness display of his own.
Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the First Son and commander of the UPDF, posted a video of himself performing a series of push-ups, sparking excitement, debate and political interpretation among his supporters and critics alike.
The nearly minute-long clip shows the four-star general dropping to the floor in what appears to be an office or training room before launching into a rapid succession of push-ups.Dressed casually in a light-coloured T-shirt and military-style trousers, Muhoozi appears focused and determined as he repeatedly lowers and raises his body with little sign of fatigue.
FITNESS DISPLAY LEAVES FOLLOWERS AMAZED
Observers who watched the clip noted that Muhoozi barely paused between repetitions, keeping his body elevated and his arms pumping continuously as he powered through the routine.The video quickly spread across X, formerly Twitter, where thousands of Ugandans weighed in on the display.
Some supporters interpreted the fitness demonstration as a message that the CDF remains physically strong and ready for any challenge.
“He wants Ugandans to know he is very healthy and ready to lead by example,” a source familiar with the thinking among Muhoozi’s supporters told The Investigator.
The source added that Muhoozi has on several occasions emphasized physical fitness within the UPDF and is reportedly unhappy with commanders who have allowed themselves to become unfit.According to military insiders, the general has encouraged officers to spend more time in gyms and training grounds rather than behind office desks.
BALAAM LEADS THE PRAISE CHORUS
The reactions online were swift. Local Government Minister Balaam Barugahara, one of Muhoozi’s most vocal supporters, was among the first to celebrate the display.
“World champion Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba,” Balaam posted. His message was accompanied by praise from other supporters who described the CDF as one of the fittest military leaders in the region.
Diplomat Colleb Rujungu joked that what Ugandans saw on camera was only a small fraction of the workout. “Before the camera ignited the capture he had taken like 1000000000 push-ups. Very fit General,” he wrote.Political commentator Fred Shaka also joined the conversation, repeatedly backing supporters who viewed the clip as authentic.
AI CLAIMS SPARK ONLINE WAR
But not everyone was convinced. As the video gained traction, sceptics emerged claiming the footage was either edited or enhanced using artificial intelligence.
Benjamin Wamono bluntly declared: “That’s AI guys.” Talemwa Eddy echoed the doubts, posting: “It’s looped!!! Fake video.” Others questioned whether the man in the video was even the CDF. “We know Muhoozimana that ain’t him, you got someone resembling him,” wrote Wadada Paul Jr. Morgan Pound added: “He is good but that’s not him please.”
The debate soon evolved into a full-scale online battle between supporters and critics.Some users argued that the speed of the push-ups made the clip appear unusual, while others insisted there was nothing extraordinary about a military commander exercising.
CRITICS QUESTION TECHNIQUE
One user sarcastically asked whether Ugandans were expected to be shocked by a soldier doing push-ups. “So u want us to be amazed by a tiger eating meat,” wrote Lukman Ricky.
Another commenter, Don Amollo, criticised the technique rather than the effort. “No strength here, just bouncing on the floor like a ball. He needs to go slow and steady, chin to the ground and up without locking arms. The marine way, the Kenyan way,” he posted.Others demanded even more repetitions from the general. “Nga akubye ntono, those are less to be a CDF, at least 51 like his age,” commented one follower.
PRESIDENTIAL TALK RETURNS
Yet even critics appeared to acknowledge that the fitness challenge had succeeded in capturing public attention. Several supporters used the opportunity to revive discussions about Muhoozi’s political future. “But why doesn’t General just become our president? We are getting tired of the wait,” wrote Tumukunde Tonny.
Fred Shaka responded: “Counsel, the signs are very clear.” Such comments are likely to fuel fresh speculation about the political significance of the video, especially given Muhoozi’s massive online following and reputation for making headlines through social media posts.
FOLLOWING IN MUSEVENI’S FOOTSTEPS
The timing of the video has also attracted attention. Only recently, President Yoweri Museveni responded to critics questioning his fitness by releasing footage of himself performing push-ups inside a State House gym.
The President accompanied the video with the now-famous phrase: “Jajja is still fit.” Political observers now see similarities between the two displays.While neither Museveni nor Muhoozi explicitly linked their workouts to politics, supporters have interpreted the videos as demonstrations of strength, discipline and readiness.
COUNTRY LEFT TALKING
Whether intended or not, the message appears to resonate strongly with sections of the public.
Military fitness has long been associated with leadership qualities in Uganda, and displays of physical endurance often attract significant attention whenever they involve senior commanders.
For supporters, the latest video reinforced Muhoozi’s image as a hands-on military leader who practices what he preaches. For critics, it raised fresh questions about image management and political symbolism. Yet perhaps the biggest winner from the entire episode was social media itself.For hours, timelines were flooded with screenshots, memes, jokes and heated arguments about everything from push-up technique to presidential succession.
By Thursday evening, the push-up challenge had become one of the most discussed political and military clips on Ugandan social media.Whether viewed as a simple fitness routine, a military motivational exercise or a subtle political statement, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s push-ups achieved one thing beyond doubt—they got the entire country talking.
