The walls are finally beginning to close in on the people accused of participating in the brutal mob killing of Rugby Cranes and Black Pirates star Sydney Gondodyo.
In a major breakthrough, Uganda Police on Monday paraded eight suspects believed to have taken part in the horrific attack that shocked the country and left the rugby fraternity in mourning.
The suspects, seen in police custody in pictures released by authorities, stood silently as investigators unveiled them before the media. The lineup included seven men and one woman, all of whom are expected to face charges related to the mob violence that led to Gondodyo’s death.
The arrests have brought a measure of relief to grieving family members, teammates and thousands of Ugandans who have spent days demanding justice for the fallen sportsman.
However, many believe the job is far from over. The biggest question dominating social media remains: Where is Obed?
EIGHT SUSPECTS PARADED
According to police, the eight suspects currently in custody are:

Tugume Hannington
Police spokesperson Assistant Superintendent of Police Rachael Kawala confirmed the arrests.
“Five additional suspects have been arrested in connection with the death of Sydney Gongodyo, a professional rugby player, following an incident that occurred on June 5, 2026,” Kawala said.
“This brings the total number of suspects in custody to eight as investigations into the alleged mob killing continue.”
She added that police are actively pursuing other individuals believed to have participated in the attack.”Efforts are ongoing to identify, trace and apprehend other individuals believed to have participated in the incident,” she said.
Sources close to the investigation told The Investigator that detectives are reviewing video footage, witness statements and social media clips to identify everyone involved in the attack.
THE MAN EVERYONE WANTS
Despite the arrests, public attention remains focused on a man identified only as Obed.
He is the suspect allegedly seen in viral videos and photographs carrying a massive tree trunk and repeatedly striking the helpless rugby player during the deadly assault.The shocking images have become some of the most disturbing evidence from the attack.
Investigators believe the blows delivered using the heavy wooden log may have caused some of the fatal injuries suffered by Gondodyo. Sources say Obed disappeared shortly after the incident. Intelligence reports suggest he may have crossed into a neighboring country, with some investigators suspecting he could have fled to the Democratic Republic of Congo. Police have not officially confirmed his whereabouts.
SOCIAL MEDIA ERUPTS
The parade of suspects triggered an avalanche of reactions online. While many Ugandans praised police for making progress, countless others insisted justice would not be complete until Obed is arrested. “We want Obed. This search is not over until Obed is on that list,” wrote Immy Namboozo. Another user, Owen BM, questioned the absence of the alleged key suspect.
“Where is the one called Obed? The one that was putting on a yellow KCCA FC shirt holding a big stick or wood piece?”
Sami14 added: “Until we see Obed!” Festo Jnr echoed similar sentiments. “Where is Obed?” he asked.Many users also demanded that every individual visible in the viral footage be investigated. “We need the woman who was shouting ‘bamute’ and even the people who were recording. All those people aren’t innocent,” wrote one social media user.
SPORTS MINISTER SPEAKS OUT
State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang welcomed the arrests but called for a thorough investigation. “I thank Uganda Police for the work done so far to apprehend some of the perpetrators in the murder of Sydney,” Ogwang said.
“We, however, ask for much more in ensuring that investigations are done in earnest and justice is swiftly served.” The minister strongly condemned mob justice.
“Mob justice should never be an option in our communities, and I strongly condemn the act of taking the law into our own hands. Sydney didn’t deserve to meet death in this gruesome manner.” Ogwang also extended condolences to the rugby community and the bereaved family.
“My heartfelt condolences go to Uganda Rugby, the family and the entire sports family in Uganda.”
A NATION IN MOURNING
The arrests come only days after Gondodyo was laid to rest at his ancestral home in Budadiri.
Hundreds of mourners turned up to pay their last respects to the rugby star whose promising career was cut short in a matter of minutes. Friends describe him as humble, disciplined and dedicated to the sport he loved.The Rugby Cranes star leaves behind a widow and a one-year-old child. His death has sparked a national conversation about mob justice and the dangers of trial by public opinion.
Many Ugandans argue that the tragedy could have been prevented had law enforcement reached the scene earlier or had bystanders intervened to stop the violence.
KCCA FC DISTANCES ITSELF
The controversy has also engulfed KCCA FC after footage emerged showing one of the alleged attackers wearing the club’s yellow jersey. The club quickly released a statement distancing itself from the suspect.
“KCCA FC has become aware of social media footage showing an individual in the club’s jersey participating in a tragic mob attack on rugby player Sydney Gongodyo,” the club said.
“The club strongly condemns the violence and states that the individual’s actions do not reflect KCCA FC values.”The statement sought to reassure supporters that the actions of one individual should not be associated with the club.
COURT APPEARANCE LOOMS
Sources indicate the first batch of suspects could be produced before court as early as Wednesday. Political commentator Owek Joshua Byamazima welcomed the development.
“Eight arrests have been confirmed as of today. The first batch of suspects is expected to be produced before court on Wednesday. Great progress,” he said.
Legal experts say prosecutors will likely rely heavily on video evidence, eyewitness testimony and forensic findings to build the case. If convicted, the suspects could face severe penalties including a death sentence.
NO REST UNTIL ALL ARE CAUGHT
For now, the arrest of eight suspects represents a significant milestone in the investigation. Yet for many Ugandans, justice remains incomplete. Across social media platforms, one message continues to dominate. The public wants everyone involved brought to book.
Most importantly, they want the arrest of the man many believe delivered the fatal blows.
As detectives continue their hunt, pressure is mounting on investigators to track down the fugitive known as Obed.Until then, the nation continues to mourn one of its rugby heroes while demanding accountability for a killing that has horrified Uganda and reignited calls for an end to mob justice.
