President Yoweri Museveni and First Lady Janet Museveni have congratulated their grandson, Ruhamya Kainerugaba, following his successful completion of cadet training at the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom.

The President and First Lady recently received Ruhamya, marking a significant family moment after his graduation alongside fellow Ugandan cadet Andrew Bakira Ruyondo.

The occasion brought together three generations of a family whose history has been closely associated with Uganda’s political and military establishment.

A Grandparents’ Celebration

For President Museveni and Janet Museveni, Ruhamya’s graduation was more than a formal military achievement. It was an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishment of their grandson after completing the demanding Sandhurst programme.

Museveni used the occasion to congratulate both Ruhamya and Bakira, while encouraging Uganda’s younger generation to consider military service as a pathway to discipline, leadership and national service.

“Now, God has blessed me with one of my grandchildren, Ruhamya, joining my big family of UPDF, having graduated, with his colleague, Bakyira, from Sandhurst recently,” Museveni said.

“Congratulations Ruhamya, congratulations Bakyira.”

The President also congratulated the parents of the two young officers for supporting them through their training.

Museveni Thanks God

In his message, Museveni placed the graduation within a broader reflection on Uganda’s history and his political movement. “Ugandans, especially the Bazzukulu. Greetings,” he began.

“I want to use this occasion to thank God that has protected and enabled Uganda to address its numerous problems.” Museveni also thanked God for what he described as the blessing of the National Resistance Movement and its precursor organisations over more than six decades.

“I thank God for blessing the NRM for the last 60 years plus, starting with its precursors,” he said. The remarks reflected the President’s longstanding tendency to connect personal and family milestones to the wider political and historical journey of the country.

‘Army Service Gives You Good Foundation’

Museveni used Ruhamya’s achievement to send a message to young Ugandans, arguing that military service can provide an important foundation for personal development.

“Young Ugandans, Army service gives you good foundation,” he said. The President’s remarks emphasised discipline, training and service to the country as some of the benefits young people can gain through military careers.

His comments were welcomed by several Ugandans who responded to the congratulatory message on social media.

Johnson Byarabaha said he often advises young graduates to consider careers in the military and police.

“I usually tell fresh graduates to join army or police. I think this is a good lesson for our children to learn. The forces give a good platform for mentorship and contributing to the country’s development,” he said.

BALAAM PRAISES MUSEVENI

Local Government Minister Balaam Barugahara was among those who congratulated Museveni on witnessing the achievement of his grandson.

“Thank you Mr President for mentoring millions of Ugandans! God bless you,” Barugahara said.

His message reflected the support from government officials and NRM supporters who viewed Ruhamya’s graduation as an example of the importance of mentorship and leadership development.

Other supporters similarly praised Museveni for being able to witness another generation of his family entering military service.

Ugandans Congratulate Ruhamya And Bakira

The achievement of Ruhamya and Bakira attracted messages of congratulations from members of the public.

Akello Jane Mary described their graduation as an inspiring milestone for Uganda’s young generation. “A truly inspiring milestone for Uganda’s young generation. Congratulations to Ruhamya and Bakyira upon successfully completing their training at Sandhurst,” she said.

She added that the discipline, dedication and patriotism acquired during military training should inspire other young Ugandans.

Another social media user, kdbdave, thanked God for allowing Museveni to witness the achievements of his grandchildren.

“Praise God Almighty who sustains our country. Congratulations to Your Excellence @KagutaMuseveni for witnessing your children’s children. God be magnified,” the user wrote.

Emma Kalisa also celebrated the family significance of the occasion, describing it as exciting to see Ruhamya standing alongside his grandfather.

“Congratulations, Muzukuru. It is very exciting to see a grandson standing with his grandfather, and following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather to become a good soldier and advocate for peace, unity and security of the people,” Kalisa said.

Following A Family Military Tradition

Ruhamya’s entry into the UPDF comes against the backdrop of a strong military tradition within his immediate family.

His father, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, is the Chief of Defence Forces of the UPDF, while President Museveni has been Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces throughout his presidency.

Ruhamya’s decision to pursue military training therefore places him within a family history that has been closely connected to Uganda’s armed forces for decades.

His Sandhurst graduation is consequently likely to attract significant public interest as he begins his professional military career.

However, Museveni’s message sought to frame the achievement not simply as a family accomplishment but as part of a wider national story about young Ugandans entering public service.

The Significance Of Sandhurst

The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst is one of the world’s most recognised institutions for training military officers.

Its demanding programme combines military skills, physical endurance, leadership development, academic instruction and field exercises.

For Ugandan officers, training at Sandhurst also provides exposure to international military standards and gives them an opportunity to build professional networks with cadets from other countries.

Ruhamya’s successful completion of the programme therefore represents an important stage in his development as a military officer. He graduated alongside Bakira, another Ugandan who has now completed the prestigious military training.

A New Chapter For Ruhamya

While the graduation was celebrated by the Museveni family, Ruhamya’s return marks the beginning rather than the end of his military journey. He must now translate his Sandhurst training into practical service within the UPDF.

His family background will inevitably place him under greater public scrutiny than many young officers. His grandfather is the country’s long-serving President, while his father leads the armed forces. That background brings both opportunities and expectations.

The challenge for Ruhamya will be to establish his own professional record and demonstrate the leadership, discipline and competence expected of a trained military officer.

A Message To The Bazzukulu

Museveni’s message ultimately went beyond his grandson. By addressing “the Bazzukulu” — his term for Uganda’s younger generation — the President used the family occasion to deliver a message about service and national responsibility.

His praise for Ruhamya and Bakira was accompanied by an appeal to young Ugandans to consider careers that contribute to the country’s security and development.

The graduation thus became both a personal celebration and a public statement about the importance of preparing Uganda’s next generation for leadership.

For President Museveni and First Lady Janet, however, the moment remains deeply personal: a grandson returning home from one of the world’s most prestigious military academies, ready to begin his own career in uniform.

As Ruhamya starts this new chapter alongside his fellow Sandhurst graduate Bakira, the attention will now shift from the ceremony to the service that follows — and whether the young officers can translate their prestigious training into a meaningful contribution to Uganda’s military and national life.
