The ancient hills of Tooro woke to the sound of royal drums, church bells and thousands of voices yesterday as Prince Edward Rukidi Nyabongo moved through a carefully choreographed succession ritual that culminated in his coronation as the new Omukama of Tooro.

The coronation of Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, following the death of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV on August 27, marks the beginning of a new chapter for the kingdom after weeks of mourning, succession consultations and controversy.

Yesterday’s ceremonies combined traditional royal rites with Christian worship, underscoring the distinctive way in which Tooro blends its ancient cultural institutions with modern religious practice.

The main programme, began at St John’s Cathedral in Fort Portal, where the newly installed king attended a special church service before proceeding to Karuziika Palace for the traditional enthronement ceremonies.

King arrives at cathedral

At 9:43am, Nyabongo arrived at St John’s Cathedral accompanied by his wife, Rebecca Amoding-Rukidi, and his Baduma royal guards, as additional security personnel secured the route and the cathedral surroundings.

The arrival was marked by the ringing of church bells, signalling the beginning of a historic religious service for a king whose ascension has attracted national attention.

The sight of the new king and his wife entering the cathedral provided a striking contrast to the traditional royal rituals that had dominated the previous night.

At the cathedral, the king was received by church leaders, cultural officials, members of the royal family, dignitaries and invited guests, with the congregation joining in prayers for the new reign.

The service formed an important bridge between the Christian faith and the cultural traditions of Tooro, with religious leaders offering prayers and blessings for the king as he prepared to proceed to Karuziika Palace for the final enthronement rites.

The service was also symbolic because St John’s Cathedral had featured prominently in the transition following the death of Oyo.

It was at the same cathedral that mourners gathered for the late king’s funeral rites, and where the Babiito leadership announced the selection of Nyabongo as Oyo’s successor.

A night of tradition

The church service followed a dramatic night of traditional activities that began on Monday when Nyabongo left Rwengoma Palace in a procession towards Karuziika.

The programme released by the kingdom had provided for the king-designate to trek through Fort Portal towards the royal palace, accompanied by subjects and supporters carrying reed lights.

The procession was intended to symbolise the journey from the old order into a new reign.

At Karuziika, Nyabongo was expected to pass through Mugabante, the traditional entrance to the palace, where he would participate in a symbolic mock battle.

The ritual battle is understood as part of the traditional process through which the incoming king demonstrates his ability to overcome obstacles before assuming the throne.

After the mock battle, the king was to proceed through Omusanga, the main entrance to Karuziika, before being led towards the royal throne.

The overnight rituals were conducted away from the glare of the public ceremony, reflecting the secretive nature of some of Tooro’s royal traditions.

Reports on the coronation programme also indicated that traditional custodians were involved in rituals surrounding the royal drums.

The drums had been turned upside down following the death of Oyo, symbolising mourning and the absence of a reigning monarch. Their restoration to an upright position formed part of the transition towards a new reign.

From mourning to celebration

The coronation comes just over a month after the death of Oyo, who died in the United States on August 27 at the age of 34.

His death plunged Tooro into mourning and triggered an immediate question over who would inherit the throne.

The Babiito Royal Clan eventually selected Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, who adopted the royal name Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I.

The selection was subsequently presented to the Tooro Kingdom Supreme Council, which endorsed him as successor.

Government later acknowledged the outcome of the traditional succession process, paving the way for the coronation.

The Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development said the succession process had been conducted by the recognised traditional institutions of Tooro in accordance with the kingdom’s customs, traditions and established practices.

The coronation therefore represents not only a colourful cultural ceremony but also the formal conclusion of the succession process that followed Oyo’s death.

The Queen beside the King

At the centre of the religious ceremony was the new Queen, Rebecca Amoding-Rukidi, who accompanied her husband to the cathedral.

Her appearance beside Nyabongo adds another dimension to the new royal household as the king begins his reign. The couple’s arrival was met with the ceremonial ringing of the cathedral bells and attention from the large gathering that had assembled to witness the historic occasion.

The presence of the Queen also comes at a sensitive moment for the kingdom, following weeks of debate over succession and the future of the royal institution.

The coronation organising committee had earlier said the ceremony would bring together cultural leaders, government officials, religious leaders, politicians, businesspeople and members of the public.

A kingdom turns the page

For many Batooro, the events at St John’s Cathedral represented the public and spiritual face of a transition that had largely unfolded behind palace walls.

The church service provided an opportunity to place the new reign under prayer before Nyabongo moved to Karuziika Palace for the traditional ceremonies.

The formal coronation at the palace was expected to follow the cathedral service, with Nyabongo undergoing the remaining rituals before being formally presented as Omukama.

The programme had been designed to combine Christian worship and traditional culture, reflecting the structure of previous major royal occasions in Tooro. Reports had indicated that President Yoweri Museveni was expected to attend the palace ceremony as chief guest.

A coronation watched beyond Tooro

The events attracted attention well beyond the kingdom because Nyabongo’s ascension follows one of the most closely watched succession periods in recent Tooro history.

His selection came after members of Oyo’s family raised claims concerning a son whom they said the late king had left behind in the United States.

The Babiito leadership and the kingdom’s institutions nevertheless proceeded with Nyabongo’s selection and endorsement. The government subsequently said it had received the resolutions of the succession committee and the Supreme Council supporting the process.

The new king now faces the challenge of beginning his reign against this background while seeking to preserve the unity and dignity of the institution. For the moment, however, the focus is on the coronation.

From the reed-lit procession through Fort Portal in the night, the traditional rituals at Karuziika, the ringing of church bells at St John’s Cathedral and the appearance of Nyabongo beside his Queen, Tooro has moved from mourning into a new royal chapter.

The bells that rang when Nyabongo arrived at the cathedral were more than a ceremonial welcome. They announced to Fort Portal and the wider kingdom that the transition from one reign to another had entered its most visible stage.

At Karuziika Palace, the final rituals were to complete what began with the selection of Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma.

With the royal name Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, the new monarch now steps into the long history of the Tooro throne — carrying the weight of tradition, the expectations of his subjects and the responsibility of guiding the kingdom into a new era.
