Scenes of celebration erupted across Uganda as Arsenal fans finally witnessed the end of a painful 22-year wait for the English Premier League title, sparking wild excitement in bars, streets, homes, and fan parks across the country.For many Ugandan supporters, Arsenal’s triumph was more than just a football achievement — it was an emotional release built on decades of hope, heartbreak, mockery from rival fans, and unwavering loyalty. From Kampala to Gulu, Mbarara to Jinja, thousands of supporters dressed in red and white poured into the streets waving flags, singing club songs, and celebrating what many described as “the return of the real Arsenal.”
The North London club last won the Premier League title in the famous 2003/2004 “Invincibles” season under legendary manager Arsène Wenger. Since then, Arsenal supporters around the world endured years of disappointment, near misses, and criticism from rival fans, especially supporters of Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester City.In Uganda, where the English Premier League enjoys massive popularity, Arsenal has one of the biggest fan bases in the country. For over two decades, local supporters remained loyal despite difficult seasons and constant jokes about their club “living in the past.” That suffering finally came to an end as Arsenal reclaimed the league crown in dramatic fashion.
Celebrations everywhere
The moment the final whistle confirmed Arsenal as champions, celebrations exploded instantly. In Kampala, fans gathered in popular sports bars around areas such as Wandegeya, Kabalagala, Najjera, and Ntinda, chanting the names of manager Mikel Arteta and star players who guided the club back to glory. Car horns filled the streets while some supporters climbed onto rooftops waving giant Arsenal banners.“This feels unreal,” said Brian Kato, a lifelong Arsenal supporter from Makerere. “People have laughed at us for years. They called us dreamers and said Arsenal would never win again. Today we have answered everyone.”
Another supporter, Shamim Nansubuga from Wakiso, described the victory as “a reward for patience and loyalty.”“We stayed with Arsenal during the hard years,” she said. “We defended this club when everyone mocked us. This title means everything.”The celebrations were not limited to Kampala alone. In Mbale, fans organized impromptu processions through town centers while in Mbarara, supporters reportedly slaughtered goats and shared meals as part of the festivities. In Gulu and Arua, fans danced late into the night as DJs played football anthems mixed with local music.
Emotional reactions
Social media platforms were flooded with emotional reactions from Ugandan Arsenal supporters. Photos and videos showed fans crying tears of joy, hugging strangers, lighting flares, and singing club chants. Some supporters posted old photos from previous disappointing seasons, saying they had “waited too long for this moment.”Rival fans also joined the online conversation, with some congratulating Arsenal supporters while others jokingly admitted they were not ready for the noise and celebrations that would follow in Uganda for weeks.Football analysts say Arsenal’s return to the top has been years in the making. Under Mikel Arteta, the club slowly rebuilt itself with a young and energetic squad capable of competing with Europe’s best teams. Players such as Bukayo Saka, Martin Ødegaard, Declan Rice, and William Saliba became symbols of Arsenal’s resurgence and resilience.
Ugandan fans particularly connected with the youthful spirit of the team. Many admired Arteta’s determination and ability to transform Arsenal from a struggling side into champions again. The victory also restored belief among supporters who had nearly lost hope after years of instability.“This title is special because nobody gave Arsenal a chance,” said football commentator Isaac Ssenyonga. “The fans suffered for years. Young supporters grew up without seeing Arsenal win the league. This is history for them.”For younger Ugandan Arsenal fans under the age of 22, this was their first experience witnessing their club crowned Premier League champions. Many had only heard stories about Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira, Dennis Bergkamp, and the legendary Invincibles era from older fans and YouTube highlights.
Now, a new generation has its own memories to celebrate. In several schools, universities, and workplaces, Arsenal supporters arrived wearing jerseys and scarves despite warnings from administrators and employers. Friendly banter between rival fans dominated conversations throughout the day, with Arsenal supporters proudly reminding everyone that the trophy drought was finally over.Some businesses also benefited from the celebrations. Jersey vendors reported increased sales while bars and restaurants experienced huge crowds during and after the title-clinching match. Motorbike riders decorated boda bodas with Arsenal stickers and flags as they joined processions around different towns.
The celebrations highlighted the enormous influence of European football in Uganda, where Premier League matches attract millions of viewers every weekend. Football rivalries often shape friendships, conversations, and social gatherings across the country.For Arsenal supporters, however, this victory was deeply personal. It represented endurance through years of disappointment and ridicule. It was proof that loyalty can eventually be rewarded.As fireworks lit the skies over Kampala and fans continued celebrating deep into the night, one message could be heard repeatedly from jubilant supporters:“Arsenal is back.” And after 22 long years of waiting, Ugandan Arsenal fans finally had every reason to believe it.
