President Yoweri Museveni on Tuesday led the nation in paying tribute to former Third Deputy Prime Minister and Adjumani West Member of Parliament, Gen. Moses Ali, describing him as a fearless patriot whose life was dedicated to peace, national unity and the development of Uganda.
During an official tribute at Parliament, where the late general’s body lay in state ahead of his final journey home to Adjumani, Museveni laid a wreath on the casket and delivered an emotional farewell to one of Uganda’s longest-serving political and military figures.
“This morning, I joined the people of West Nile and the entire nation to mourn Gen. Moses Ali and laid a wreath on his coffin at Parliament,” Museveni said.
The President hailed Gen. Ali’s historic contribution to Uganda, noting that he chose reconciliation over conflict after years of political upheaval.”He made an important contribution to Uganda’s history. He rejected the brutality of Idi Amin’s regime, worked with us in the struggle for freedom, promoted peace and remained committed to the development of West Nile,” Museveni said.
Museveni said Gen. Ali appreciated that lasting peace was the foundation upon which development and prosperity could be built.
“Gen. Ali understood that peace and development go together. I therefore appeal to the leaders in West Nile and the whole country to continue working hard to raise household incomes and achieve prosperity,” the President said.
He concluded his tribute by thanking the veteran politician for decades of dedicated public service.”I thank him for his service to Uganda and pray that his soul rests in eternal peace.”
The solemn ceremony attracted Cabinet ministers, Members of Parliament, diplomats, senior military officers, cultural leaders and hundreds of mourners, all united in celebrating the life of a man widely regarded as one of the country’s most influential leaders.
Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja described Gen. Ali as a bridge builder who remained committed to national unity throughout his public life. Deputy Prime Minister Rebecca Kadaga said Uganda had lost a distinguished statesman whose experience and wisdom shaped government over several decades.
Government Chief Whip Dr Ruth Aceng praised Gen. Ali for mentoring generations of leaders, saying his calm approach to politics earned him respect across party lines.
Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oboth Oboth said the late general’s decades of service in Parliament and government reflected unwavering dedication to the country.
Opposition leaders also joined the nation in mourning.
National Unity Platform president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine) extended condolences to the bereaved family and the people of West Nile, describing Gen. Ali as a significant figure in Uganda’s political history whose passing marks the end of an era. He urged Ugandans to honour leaders through service and commitment to the country.
Former Leader of Opposition Mathias Mpuuga, Democratic Party president Norbert Mao, and other political leaders also paid tribute, remembering Gen. Ali as a seasoned politician whose ability to work across political divides contributed to stability in the region.
Religious leaders prayed for the deceased, calling on Ugandans to emulate his commitment to reconciliation and peaceful coexistence.
Born in Adjumani District, Gen. Moses Ali served Uganda in various capacities spanning more than five decades—as a soldier, minister, deputy prime minister and legislator. His political career survived multiple administrations, making him one of the country’s longest-serving public servants.
His remains will be transported to Adjumani for burial, where thousands of mourners are expected to gather to give the veteran leader his final send-off.
As Parliament fell silent and mourners filed past his casket for a final farewell, the tributes reflected a shared message: Uganda has lost one of the last surviving figures of a generation that shaped the nation’s modern political history. For many, Gen. Moses Ali will be remembered not only as a soldier and politician, but also as a champion of peace, reconciliation and the development of West Nile.
