KAMPALA, Uganda: In August 2016, Hon. Robert Ssentamu Kyagulanyi, known by many as the leader of the National Unity Platform, took a significant step in his life that few might have expected at the time. After much procrastination and deliberation, he attended his first lecture at the Law School of the International University of East Africa (IUEA). Seven years later, he stands proud as a graduate with a Bachelor of Laws degree from Cavendish University.
Reflecting on his journey, Kyagulanyi expresses deep gratitude towards those who stood by him through this challenging yet fulfilling chapter of his life. He acknowledges that without the unwavering support and encouragement from his friends and family, this achievement would have remained a distant dream.
“Dear Sylver Kyagulanyi,” he begins, “we discussed this idea of going to law school as far back as 20 years ago while we were still in the MDD department at Makerere. You continued to encourage me, even when I dragged my feet for a few years, you led by example and did it. Today, I have also [done] it!”
Kyagulanyi also extends his heartfelt thanks to Don Sheriff, a fellow student whose shared passion for freedom and justice turned a simple academic connection into a deep friendship. He credits Sheriff for his invaluable assistance throughout law school, a period marked by both academic and personal challenges.
David Lewis Rubongoya, another key figure in Kyagulanyi’s academic journey, receives special recognition for his foresight and advice. It was Rubongoya who suggested transferring from IUEA to Cavendish University due to concerns about IUEA’s accreditation status at the time. “I am glad that I listened and enrolled afresh,” Kyagulanyi remarks, emphasizing the importance of that decision.
No tribute would be complete without acknowledging the vital role played by his wife, Barbie Kyagulanyi. “I am sure I wouldn’t have completed this course without your sometimes inconveniencing push,” he confesses. She was his constant source of encouragement, especially during moments when he felt like giving up. Her unwavering support ensured that he stayed on course, even when the journey seemed insurmountable.
The journey, however, was not without its setbacks. Kyagulanyi recalls a significant challenge that delayed his graduation by a year. After completing all other requirements, he was informed that he had missed a few lectures in one course unit, necessitating another semester of re-attendance. Though initially disheartened, he took this setback in stride, using it as an opportunity to further solidify his understanding and earn his degree with legitimacy.
Kyagulanyi says he also faced external challenges from detractors who sought to undermine his academic progress. When news of his impending graduation surfaced, efforts were made to stop him, including a petition to the National Council for Higher Education. The intense scrutiny he endured—unlike anything most students face—ultimately culminated in his successful clearance to graduate.
“I don’t know if any other Ugandan student has been subjected to this before,” he muses, but the experience only strengthens his resolve. As he reflects on his journey, Kyagulanyi acknowledges the Ghetto People who have been his constant motivation. “Over the past two decades, you guys have kept me on tenterhooks to be the best of myself and give my best energy to everything I do,” he says, hoping that his story will inspire others to pursue their dreams, no matter the obstacles.
Finally, Kyagulanyi gives thanks to God, whom he credits with seeing him through every challenge. “God is great!” he exclaims, with a deep sense of gratitude and fulfillment. This milestone is not just a personal victory for Kyagulanyi but a testament to perseverance, the power of support systems, and the belief that it is never too late to chase one’s dreams. As he dons his graduation gown, he stands not only as a law graduate but as a beacon of inspiration for millions who dare to dream.
