Uganda’s outgoing Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, has officially withdrawn from the race for Speaker of the 12th Parliament amid mounting political pressure, ongoing investigations, and recent security operations targeting properties linked to her.
In a statement released on Sunday night, the embattled Speaker confirmed that after extensive consultations and deep reflection, she had resolved not to contest for the position again. According to Among, the decision was made in the interest of preserving unity and stability within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).She also pledged her full support to whichever candidates President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, commonly known as “Ssabalwanyi,” and the party leadership eventually endorse for the powerful parliamentary position.
War Chest
Until Sunday, Among had remained adamant about challenging the NRM establishment by contesting as an independent candidate, similar to what her predecessor Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga attempted five years ago.Sources close to the Speaker claimed that Among and her allies were confident her financial muscle and mobilisation network would give her a significant advantage against any NRM-backed candidate.
“Most of the current Members of Parliament were sponsored by Among. We were confident of victory if she appeared on the ballot. Not even Museveni’s presence at Kololo would have stopped us,” a close ally told this publication.Insiders within Among’s camp further revealed that plans were already underway to match the reported Shs100 million facilitation package allegedly extended to newly elected MPs by the ruling establishment.“We had already lined up resources for the campaign, and funds from our sponsors were being processed,” the source added.
Capitulation statement
In her statement, Among expressed gratitude to President Museveni, the NRM, and members of the 11th Parliament for entrusting her with leadership responsibilities as both Deputy Speaker and Speaker. She also thanked her family, friends, and supporters for standing by her throughout the past five years.Despite stepping aside, Among maintained that she remains available to serve the country in any capacity assigned to her by the President and the party. She also pledged full cooperation with ongoing investigations into allegations linked to her leadership.
Her withdrawal came just days after security agencies reportedly raided properties associated with her in Nakasero, Kigo, and Ntinda. At around the same time, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba publicly endorsed Defence Minister Jacob Oboth-Oboth for the Speakership race, further intensifying pressure on the outgoing Speaker.

Ugandans took to X (formerly Twitter) yesterday with mixed reactions following Anita Among’s capitulation in the race for the 12th Speakership.While some users expressed sympathy and remorse, others appeared pleased by what they described as the “pain and torture” she is allegedly facing from the ruling party, especially after security operatives reportedly raided her homes on Sunday.“You frustrated me deeply in 2024. I truly hope you now taste the cold, harsh walls of Luzira Prison. Let this be a hard lesson to you and everyone else: when you hold an influential position, you must use it to uplift people, not to suffocate and destroy them. Look around. Do you see how almost every Ugandan is celebrating your downfall with joy? That is exactly what you sowed. You will reap it fully, and I assure you, it will not be easy,” Ronald Agaba posted on X.Another user, Ali Sisye, wrote: “After realising that you’re not among the Bachwezi, you have accepted defeat. Mama had sent you greetings and said, ‘Mbu abakazi mugumira bingi.’”
Meanwhile, some supporters urged her not to step down. “We, your voters, politely decline your resignation. We want you to remain our Speaker, chosen by God,” Jacob Otile tweeted.Pastor Martin Ssempa praised her move, describing it as the best decision under the circumstances and assuring her of continued prayers and support. Veteran journalist Charles Onyango-Obbo commented that challenging the political machinery of President Museveni requires enormous sacrifice and resilience.Former Kampala parliamentary aspirant Abraham Luzzi encouraged Among to remain strong, saying political leadership often comes with difficult moments and criticism. Former government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo also weighed in, noting that resolving internal disagreements through compromise has long been part of the NRM’s political culture, while urging her to stay firm as the situation unfolds.
Tinkasiimire Barnabas Ateenyi the former Member of Parliament for Buyaga West saluted Among for realizing the truth. “Alot of wisdom in this decision. When you lose opportunity, you lose much but when you lose life you lose all. Congratulations for choosing life.”
Seized property revealed
Embattled Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among continues to face mounting political and legal pressure following dramatic security raids on her luxurious properties in Kampala and Kigo. The raids, carried out by state security operatives, reportedly targeted several homes linked to the outgoing Speaker as investigations into allegations surrounding her tenure intensify.Sources close to the investigations revealed that a number of high-end assets were confiscated from Among’s palatial residence in Kigo, including luxury vehicles believed to be worth billions of shillings. Among the vehicles taken to the Forensics Headquarters in Kampala after being impounded from the Kigo residence of former Speaker of Parliament Anita Among include the Rolls-Royce and a Range Rover with the personalised number plate “AAA”. The Rolls-Royce alone is estimated to be valued at a staggering Shs3.5 billion. The flashy vehicle had recently attracted public attention on social media after photos of it surfaced online.
