After decades at the centre of power, veteran politician Gen. Moses Ali has finally been kicked out of Cabinet as President Yoweri Museveni unveiled his new 2026–2031 government team.
The dramatic omission of the long-serving Adjumani West MP has already sent shockwaves through political circles, with many interpreting it as the end of an era for one of Uganda’s oldest political survivors.
Moses Ali, who has served under several governments and held powerful positions for decades, was missing from the lengthy Cabinet list released by State House. In the previous government, he served as First Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Leader of Government Business in Parliament.
Museveni instead handed the powerful First Deputy Prime Minister position to Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga, while Dr. Crispus Kiyonga was elevated to Second Deputy Prime Minister.
The surprise reshuffle signals a major generational shift inside the ruling NRM government as several old guards were either dropped, reassigned, or pushed into advisory roles.
While Moses Ali was completely left out, some senior figures survived the axe, including Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, Janet Museveni, Jim Muhwezi, Kahinda Otafiire, and Tom Butime.
Others, such as Ruth Nankabirwa, Evelyn Anite, Francis Mwebesa, and Hamson Obua, were moved to Senior Presidential Advisor positions — widely viewed as softer political landing spots.
The new Cabinet also introduced fresh faces and controversial appointments, with businessman Sanjay Tanna named Minister of Trade, while Gen. Katumba Wamala was transferred to Public Service.
Political analysts say Museveni’s latest reshuffle appears aimed at rewarding loyalists, balancing regional interests, and preparing the ruling party for another intense political cycle ahead of 2031.
However, the biggest talking point remains the fall of Moses Ali — a man many believed was politically untouchable.
At 87, the veteran politician exits Cabinet after years as one of the most recognizable power brokers in Ugandan politics.
