The brutal killing of Rugby Cranes star Sydney Gondodyo has taken an even darker turn after a second chilling CCTV video emerged showing the final terrifying moments of the celebrated sportsman as a ruthless mob descended on him with stones, kicks and savage blows.
The disturbing footage, which has since gone viral on social media, has left Ugandans horrified and demanding swift justice for the talented rugby player whose life was cut short in one of the most shocking mob attacks witnessed in recent years.The newly surfaced video paints a grim picture of a man trapped, helpless and desperately trying to survive as dozens of attackers close in on him.
In the footage, Gondodyo appears surrounded by a growing crowd of angry youths. What begins as a confrontation quickly turns into a nightmare as stones fly from all directions. Some attackers are seen kicking him repeatedly while others strike him with heavy objects.Witnesses who have viewed the video say the rugby star appears disoriented and overwhelmed as he attempts to shield himself from the relentless assault.
At one point, several men are seen taking turns attacking him while others cheer from the sidelines. The horrifying scenes have sparked widespread outrage, with many Ugandans questioning how such violence could unfold in broad daylight while people watched.The video has particularly angered viewers because some individuals can be seen recording the attack on their phones instead of trying to save the victim.One social media user, Rashid Wada, admitted that the footage had left him emotionally shattered. “Each time I watch his videos I feel like crying,” he posted.
Another commenter, Kalungi, described the attackers as heartless individuals incapable of showing basic humanity. “But these people are heartless,” he wrote.As the graphic footage spread online, thousands of Ugandans poured onto social media platforms to express grief, anger and disbelief. Many questioned how a fellow human being could be subjected to such cruelty.Jonny, another social media user, said he could not understand how people could beat another person so mercilessly.
“I don’t know if I’m weak or faint-hearted, but I do not understand how you’d beat a fellow human like that. I’d expect even an animal to be handled better. May the good Lord search our hearts and purge all hate that dwells within,” he wrote.
MOB JUSTICE UNDER FIRE
The tragic death has once again brought Uganda’s growing problem of mob justice into the spotlight.
Several commentators linked the incident to a culture where communities increasingly take the law into their own hands rather than allowing police investigations to take place.One user argued that weak law enforcement has encouraged citizens to become judges, juries and executioners.
Another commentator blamed poor leadership and a failing justice system for creating conditions that allow mob violence to thrive.The discussions have reopened painful debates about lawlessness, delayed justice and public frustration that often explodes into deadly violence.
Human rights activists have repeatedly warned that mob justice remains one of the country’s biggest threats to the rule of law.They argue that innocent people are frequently killed based on rumours, misunderstandings or false accusations before investigations can establish the truth.
“ARREST THE PERSON FILMING”
As public anger intensified, attention also turned to those who recorded the attack without intervening. Many viewers expressed outrage that individuals could stand by and film a man being beaten to death. “The person recording should also be arrested,” wrote Abdul Wandulu.
His comments reflected the feelings of many Ugandans who believe those who witnessed the violence without attempting to stop it bear some moral responsibility. The footage shows several bystanders moving around the scene while the attack continues. Critics argue that if enough people had intervened, the rugby star’s life might have been saved.Others, however, point out that mob situations are often highly dangerous and that individuals may fear becoming victims themselves if they attempt to intervene.
POLICE HUNT NETS 10TH SUSPECT
Meanwhile, police investigations into the killing continue to gather momentum.
Uganda Police Force spokesperson Rachael Kawala has confirmed the arrest of a tenth suspect believed to have participated in the deadly attack.According to police, the suspect has been identified as Kabugo Henry, a 21-year-old boda boda rider from Old Kira-Kisenyi. Investigators say Kabugo was identified after officers reviewed video footage from the incident.
Police revealed that the suspect was allegedly captured on camera wearing a blue reflector jacket while concealing part of his face with a black hood.He was arrested in Wandegeya during a joint operation involving police officers and boda boda leaders from Nakawa Division.
Authorities believe the arrest represents another important breakthrough in efforts to hold those responsible accountable.Police say investigations are still ongoing and more arrests could follow as detectives continue analysing video evidence and interviewing witnesses.
CRIES FOR JUSTICE GROW LOUDER
As investigators tighten the net around suspects, pressure is mounting on authorities to ensure that everyone involved in the attack is brought before court.Across social media, the message remains consistent: justice must be served. For many Ugandans, the case has become bigger than the death of a rugby star.
