A Kenyan man who spent seven years in the Democratic Republic of Congo has become the country’s first confirmed Ebola patient and first death from the disease, raising fresh fears of regional spread.

Kenya has confirmed its first case and death from Ebola after a Kenyan national who had lived in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for seven years died in Nairobi, prompting an urgent contact-tracing operation and renewed scrutiny of cross-border movement in East Africa.

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale announced the case on Tuesday, October 6, saying laboratory tests had confirmed that the patient was infected with the Bundibugyo virus, a species of Ebola.

The development has placed Kenya on high alert and comes only weeks after Uganda was declared free of the same Ebola outbreak following an internationally required 42-day period without a new case.

The Kenyan patient had been living in the DRC for the past seven years and reportedly fell ill about a month ago. He received treatment at several health facilities in the DRC before travelling by road to Kampala.

From Kampala, he boarded Jambojet flight JM8523 to Nairobi on Saturday, October 3.

Upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, the patient underwent routine public-health screening and immigration procedures before leaving the airport with a relative and friend. He was then taken directly to Nairobi Hospital.

It was at the hospital that his condition raised serious concern.

He presented with fever, chills, intense fatigue and weakness, muscle pain, painful swallowing, sore throat and bleeding under the skin at injection sites.

He was immediately isolated and samples were taken for laboratory testing. Tests conducted at Kenya’s National Virology Reference Laboratory and Kenya Medical Research Institute confirmed Bundibugyo Ebola virus disease. Despite receiving supportive treatment, the patient died at about 11:30pm on Monday.

His death marks the first confirmed Ebola fatality in Kenya and makes the country the latest to be affected by an outbreak that began in eastern DRC and has increasingly tested the region’s public-health defences.

DRC The Epicentre

The outbreak has been particularly devastating in the DRC, where Ebola has spread across several provinces amid insecurity, population displacement and frequent movement across borders.

According to the World Health Organisation, the current Bundibugyo virus outbreak began in Ituri Province and has expanded into dozens of health zones across six provinces.

By August 12, the WHO had recorded 4,665 confirmed cases and 2,184 deaths in the DRC alone, making it the largest Ebola outbreak ever documented in the country.

The outbreak has been made more difficult to control by insecurity, attacks on health facilities, displaced populations and extensive cross-border movement.

The WHO has warned that the combination of population mobility and limited access to healthcare increases the possibility of the virus spreading beyond the original hotspots.

Ebola is a severe viral disease that can cause fever, weakness, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhoea and, in severe cases, internal and external bleeding.

The virus is primarily transmitted through direct contact with the blood or other body fluids of an infected person, including after death. Healthcare workers and family members caring for sick patients therefore face particular risks if infection-prevention measures are not strictly followed.

Kenya Activates Response

Kenyan authorities moved quickly after confirmation of the case. So far, 28 contacts have been identified, including family members and healthcare workers who attended to the deceased.

Health officials are also tracing 23 passengers and four crew members who travelled on the same flight from Entebbe to Nairobi.

Those considered to have had significant exposure are being monitored, with quarantine arrangements being made where necessary.

Kenya says it has been preparing for the possibility of Ebola since the DRC outbreak began.

By October 6, Kenyan health authorities had screened more than 652,000 travellers and tested 267 samples in five laboratories. Only the deceased patient’s sample had tested positive.

The country has also trained 4,971 health workers at national and sub-national levels in Ebola prevention and management.

Mobile laboratories have been deployed at the Busia and Lwakhakha border points, strengthening Kenya’s ability to test suspected cases closer to points of entry.

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has also moved to support Kenya’s response, while WHO is working with authorities in Kenya and Uganda.

These preparations could prove critical because the patient’s journey demonstrates how easily a highly mobile traveller can cross several countries before the disease is detected.

The patient travelled from the DRC to Kampala by road before boarding an international flight to Nairobi.

Uganda’s Ebola All-Clear Tested

For Uganda, the Kenyan case is an uncomfortable reminder that being declared Ebola-free does not mean the country is free from the risk of reintroduction.

Uganda was declared free of the 2026 Ebola outbreak after completing the internationally recognised 42-day period without a new confirmed case.

WHO and Africa CDC announced the end of Uganda’s outbreak on August 27 after 42 consecutive days without a new case following the discharge of the last patient.

Uganda’s Ministry of Health had earlier announced that the country was Ebola-free after completing its outbreak-response measures and enhanced surveillance.

The 2026 outbreak in Uganda was linked to an imported infection from the DRC, demonstrating the importance of border surveillance and rapid detection.

Uganda recorded 20 confirmed cases and two deaths during the outbreak.

The country therefore faces the difficult task of maintaining vigilance even after successfully interrupting local transmission.

The Kenyan case has renewed questions about how the patient managed to travel from the DRC through Kampala while already ill and eventually board a flight to Nairobi.

Ugandan authorities will have to determine whether there were missed opportunities to identify the traveller at border crossings, health facilities or other points along his journey.

A Regional Warning

The Kenyan case is more than a national health emergency. It is a warning for the entire East African region.

The DRC outbreak is occurring in a region where people routinely cross borders for trade, employment, family visits, healthcare and other reasons.

The movement of people between eastern DRC, Uganda, Kenya and other countries makes regional coordination essential.

WHO has continued to stress surveillance, contact tracing, laboratory testing, infection prevention and community engagement as key tools for containing Ebola.

Kenya’s first case also demonstrates the importance of maintaining preparedness even in countries that have never previously recorded Ebola.

The rapid isolation of the patient in Nairobi, laboratory confirmation, identification of contacts and mobilisation of response teams could help prevent secondary transmission.

But the immediate concern remains the 23 passengers and four crew members who travelled on the same flight as the deceased.

Authorities must find them quickly, establish their level of exposure and monitor them through the incubation period.

For Uganda, the message is equally clear: the declaration of an Ebola-free status is not the end of vigilance. With Ebola still circulating in neighbouring DRC, the region remains vulnerable to imported cases.

Kenya’s first Ebola death has therefore transformed what appeared to be a distant Congolese crisis into a direct East African public-health threat.

The next few weeks will determine whether Kenya’s preparedness systems can stop the virus at one imported case—or whether the disease will establish another chain of transmission in the region.
