following a combined security operation in a quest to apprehend the fugitive Retired General.
The news of the captured of the once daring and darling decorated General was relayed by the acting Director of Defence Public information Col. Chris Magezi on his official X handle in which he relayed that ;
Renegade UPDF Officer Peter Elwelu has this evening been arrested by the security forces in Soroti City.
Elwelu has been on the run over involvement in subversive activities and plans to destabilize Teso.
The security forces recently recovered 15 guns in his possession, military fatigues, and two pickup trucks.
He will be charged and prosecuted in the courts of law accordingly.
In late October 2026, the current Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, publicly branded Elwelu a traitor on social media, accusing him of stockpiling weapons to launch a rebellion in eastern Uganda.
It should be noted that in 2016 whilst the 2nd Division Commander, Elwelu led the military raid on the Buhikira Palace of the Rwenzururu King, Charles Wesley Mumbere, in Kasese. The assault resulted in the deaths of over 150 people, including children. This incident drew massive condemnation from human rights groups and eventually led to U.S. government sanctions against him in May 2024.
After transitioning into a heavily religious retirement, he demolished a cultural site in 2024, which sparked local outrage in November 2024 by using a prayer camp to raze a major cultural site in the Teso sub-region, claiming it was controlled by “witchcraft” .
