Wankulukuku Stadium was transformed into a sea of excitement, colour and royal celebration on Saturday as thousands of football fans erupted into deafening cheers to welcome Ssaabasajja Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II for the 2026 Buganda Masaza Cup final.

It was a spectacle of pomp, glamour and cultural pride as the Kabaka arrived at the stadium accompanied by Princess Katrina Ssangalyambogo, drawing an overwhelming response from supporters who had gathered to witness the much-anticipated showdown between Gomba and Kyagwe.

The atmosphere reached fever pitch as the Kabaka made his grand entrance, with supporters rising to their feet, waving enthusiastically and chanting in celebration of their monarch.

Dressed for the occasion, the King acknowledged the jubilant crowds as he waved from atop the rooftop of a Mercedes-Benz, moving around the stadium in a royal procession that offered spectators an opportunity to catch a glimpse of their revered cultural leader.

The scenes were particularly striking as thousands of supporters, dressed in the colours of their respective counties, momentarily shifted their attention from the football contest to the arrival of the Kabaka.

For many, the occasion was about much more than the crowning of a football champion. It was an opportunity to celebrate the institution of Buganda’s monarchy, reaffirm cultural identity and demonstrate the enduring connection between the Kabaka and his subjects.

The royal appearance became the defining moment of the afternoon, adding an extraordinary dimension to a sporting occasion that had already attracted enormous public interest.

The excitement demonstrated the special place the Kabaka occupies in the hearts of his subjects, many of whom regard his presence at major kingdom events as an important expression of their cultural belonging and loyalty to the institution of the Buganda monarchy.

For supporters who had travelled from different parts of the kingdom, seeing the Kabaka in person was an experience that transcended the competition between the two counties.

The presence of Princess Katrina alongside the Kabaka also added to the glamour of the occasion. Her appearance with the monarch attracted attention from spectators, further reinforcing the royal character of the event.

Wankulukuku returns to the centre of Buganda football

The choice of Muteesa II Memorial Stadium, commonly known as Wankulukuku, as the venue for the 2026 final carried considerable historical and cultural significance.

The stadium has long been associated with Buganda football and has hosted some of the kingdom’s most memorable sporting occasions.

This year’s final marked another return to the traditional home of the Masaza Cup after the previous edition was held at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, where Buweekula defeated Ssingo 1-0 to claim their maiden championship.

The decision to bring the 2026 final back to Wankulukuku was therefore an opportunity to reconnect the tournament with a venue that holds a special place in the kingdom’s sporting history.

The 2026 competition was the 22nd edition of the annual tournament, which was inaugurated in 2004 and has developed into one of Uganda’s most popular grassroots football competitions.

Bringing together counties from across Buganda, the tournament has become a powerful platform for promoting football talent, community participation and cultural identity.

Its appeal stretches beyond the boundaries of the kingdom because football supporters from different backgrounds also follow the competition.

The tournament’s ability to mobilise communities has helped transform it into an important fixture on Uganda’s sporting calendar.

Gomba and Kyagwe battle for Buganda supremacy

While the Kabaka’s arrival provided the day’s biggest spectacle outside the pitch, the football contest between Gomba and Kyagwe was the centrepiece of the occasion. The two counties entered the final with different ambitions and histories in the competition.

Gomba, one of the tournament’s most successful sides, were chasing another championship to strengthen their reputation as a powerhouse of Buganda football.

The county had already demonstrated its determination by eliminating Butambala in the semi-finals, winning 3-0 on aggregate after victories in both legs.

For Kyagwe, the final represented an opportunity to write a new chapter in the county’s football history by securing its first Masaza Cup championship.

The county had fought its way through a competitive campaign to reach the decisive encounter, setting up an intriguing contest against an experienced Gomba side. They went on to defeat Gomba 1-0 to emerge winners.

Gomba’s pedigree and Kyagwe’s hunger for a maiden title provided the ingredients for a compelling final. The final followed an earlier classification match between Butambala and Bugerere, which ended goalless, setting the stage for the much-anticipated championship encounter.

More than a football tournament

Over the years, the Masaza Cup has evolved beyond a competition in which counties simply fight for sporting honours.

It has become one of the most visible expressions of Buganda’s cultural identity, bringing together people through football, music, traditional practices and community celebrations.

The competition provides an opportunity for people from different counties to demonstrate their pride in their respective communities while remaining united under the cultural leadership of the Kabaka.

It has also created opportunities for young footballers to showcase their abilities and potentially attract attention from professional clubs.

For many aspiring players, the Masaza Cup offers an important platform to demonstrate their talent before large audiences, scouts and football administrators.

The tournament’s grassroots character has been central to its popularity, with county teams attracting passionate followings from their respective communities.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has previously highlighted the competition’s contribution to youth empowerment, community cohesion and cultural diplomacy, describing it as an important platform for promoting national unity.

Saturday’s gathering at Wankulukuku illustrated that influence, with football providing the common ground through which thousands of people celebrated their heritage and expressed their attachment to the Buganda Kingdom.

But beyond the goals, tactics and competition for the coveted trophy, the most memorable spectacle was the arrival of the Kabaka.

As the monarch waved to his cheering subjects from atop the Mercedes-Benz, Wankulukuku became a theatre of royal celebration, with supporters responding with enthusiasm that reflected the emotional connection between the Kabaka and his people.

For the thousands who witnessed the occasion, the 2026 Masaza Cup final was not simply another football match.

It was a celebration of the Kabaka, the Buganda Kingdom and the enduring power of football to bring people together.

And as the roar of the crowd welcomed Ssaabasajja Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, Wankulukuku once again demonstrated why the Masaza Cup remains one of the most cherished events on Buganda’s cultural and sporting calendar.
