Ugandan police re-arrested several LGBTQ advocates and Pride event attendees on August 10, just a week after their initial arrest and release. The detained individuals include Mwanje Frank, Moses Bazibu (also known as Uncle Mo), Lukyamuzi Yusuf, Tonny Ssekamatte, Lukwago Peter, and Basaliza Herman.
According to witnesses, police officers tracked them down one by one, arresting some at their workplaces while others were taken from their homes. Authorities claim the arrests are part of an ongoing effort to curb what they described as “immoral behavior.” A police spokesman justified the operation, stating, “We can’t allow such stupid behaviors to be given space in our community.”
Officials confirmed that the detainees would be taken to court, though the specific charges remain unclear. Human rights groups have condemned the arrests, calling them a blatant violation of fundamental freedoms.
This crackdown follows an August 4 police raid on a Pride event in Kampala, where officers reportedly used excessive force against participants. International organizations and activists have urged the Ugandan government to respect the rights of LGBTQ individuals, warning that such actions deepen an already hostile environment for the community.
Despite the mounting pressure, Ugandan authorities continue their hardline stance, reinforcing the ongoing struggle for LGBTQ rights in the country.
