President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has launched a furious response against veteran journalist and Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) second-in-command Andrew Mwenda after the outspoken commentator allegedly branded the long-serving Ugandan leader “senile” during an internal ideological fallout over government policies and industrialization. In a strongly worded statement, the visibly angered Museveni dismissed Mwenda’s criticism as reckless, unpatriotic and driven by neo-colonial thinking, insisting that despite his age, he remains intellectually and politically sharp.“You will, however, discover that at 82, I am still able to defend Uganda and myself with the Bible, the AK-47 and the pen,” Museveni declared.
The President accused Mwenda and like-minded PLU activists of deliberately undermining Uganda’s industrial transformation agenda while pretending to champion economic efficiency.“You are supposed to be a journalist. Why do you not interview these so-called conmen such as Magoola, Senfuka and others? Visit their factories and projects before spreading lies,” Museveni charged. The President specifically defended Uganda’s local manufacturing and value-addition drive, including Kiira Motors, gold refining, coffee processing, dairy production and agro-industrialization projects that he said critics like Mwenda consistently sabotage.“You are ashamed to talk about Kiira Motors because it is a shame to neo-colonial agents like Mwenda,” Museveni said.
Hits PLU
He accused the PLU ideologue of promoting foreign interests aimed at keeping Africa dependent on exporting raw materials instead of finished products.“The do-nothingers like Andrew Mwenda always run around noisily telling lies while defending the neo-colonial status quo,” Museveni added. The President cited Uganda’s growing economy, gold exports, coffee boom and dairy expansion as evidence that his policies are working despite criticism from what he described as “traitors and foreign agents.”Museveni also questioned Mwenda’s motives for allegedly leaking internal government and Cabinet discussions onto social media platforms.
“What could be the real motive of Andrew Mwenda externalizing our internal discussions? It is to scare away our partners because people like Mwenda are worried by Uganda’s economic success now growing at 6.3 percent annually,” Museveni said. The President further accused Mwenda of historically sabotaging Uganda’s electricity sector by opposing the AES Bujagali power project in the early 2000s.“This is not the first time Mwenda has sabotaged Uganda’s progress,” Museveni argued.
Ofwono Opondo Warns PLU Activists
Meanwhile, senior NRM cadre and government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo has reportedly warned PLU activists and supporters against engaging in what he called “reckless political arrogance” and attacks on President Museveni.Opondo has cautioned that attempts by elements within PLU to portray Museveni as weak or senile could destabilize both the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and the country.“Those attacking the President under the cover of social media excitement should know that politics is not abuse. You cannot build leadership by insulting the historical leadership that stabilized Uganda,” Opondo reportedly warned. The remarks come amid growing political tension within pro-government circles, with observers increasingly questioning whether Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s PLU movement is gradually transforming from a pressure group into a parallel political power center positioning itself for succession battles inside the ruling establishment.
Political analysts say the latest public fallout between Museveni loyalists and prominent PLU figures exposes widening cracks within Uganda’s power structure ahead of the 2026 elections.Despite the criticism, Museveni remained defiant, invoking his liberation war background and insisting that Uganda’s transformation mission would continue regardless of opposition from critics within or outside government.
“As a freedom fighter, I am always stubbornly standing for patriotism, Pan-Africanism, socio-economic transformation and democracy. I am never swayed by traitors and foreign agents,” Museveni declared. He concluded with his trademark revolutionary slogan: “Aluta Continua. Victory is Certain.”
