The late Dr. Henry Stanley Okia, born on 9 March 1963 and who passed away on 20 August 2026, was a distinguished Ugandan educationist, school administrator, scholar, mentor and community leader whose life was defined by service, excellence and an unwavering commitment to transforming the lives of others.

For more than four decades, Dr. Okia devoted himself to education and the development of young people. His remarkable professional journey took him from the classroom to school leadership, educational consultancy, national examinations, broadcasting and academic research.

Through these different roles, he touched the lives of thousands of pupils, teachers, school administrators and members of the wider community. His contribution to Uganda’s education sector went far beyond the institutions in which he worked, earning him a reputation as an educator who believed deeply in the power of knowledge, discipline and mentorship.

A Journey That Began In The Classroom

Dr. Okia began his teaching career in the early 1980s at Naranbhai Primary School in Jinja, where he laid the foundation for what would become a distinguished career in education.

He later joined Nakasero Primary School in Kampala, where he taught Primary Seven and subsequently became Head of the Social Studies Department. His commitment to the welfare of both teachers and pupils also saw him serve as a staff representative to the Parents and Teachers Association.

In that role, he advocated for the professional welfare of teachers while also championing initiatives aimed at improving the learning environment and development of pupils.

His early years in the classroom shaped his philosophy of education and leadership. Dr. Okia believed that effective education required not only academic excellence but also strong relationships between teachers, pupils, parents and school administrators.

From Teacher To School Leader

His leadership journey gained momentum when he became Head Teacher of Lakeside Academy Primary School in Entebbe.

He later became the pioneering Head Teacher of Entebbe Junior International School, where he played a central role in establishing the institution, expanding its enrolment and laying the foundations for its academic reputation.

As an administrator, Dr. Okia combined academic discipline with an appreciation of the needs of learners, teachers and parents. He understood that a successful school depended on strong leadership, motivated staff, sound administration and a learning environment in which children could thrive.

Taking Education To National Television

Dr. Okia’s passion for education extended beyond the traditional classroom. He served the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) as an Assistant Examiner for the Primary Leaving Examinations in Social Studies, contributing to the national assessment of learners.

His contribution to education also found a unique expression through broadcasting. At the Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC), he served as a Primary School Quiz Master and spent 14 years contributing to television production. Through his educational programme, he helped make learning engaging, interactive and accessible to children across Uganda.

For many pupils, his television appearances offered an opportunity to learn outside the classroom while developing confidence, curiosity and a competitive spirit.

His work in broadcasting demonstrated another dimension of his character: the ability to communicate knowledge in ways that connected with people beyond the formal school environment.

The Hillside Chapter

One of the most significant chapters of Dr. Okia’s career was his time at Hillside Nursery and Primary School, Naalya, where he served first as Head Teacher and later as Principal.

Under his leadership, the school experienced significant growth in enrolment, infrastructure, staffing, transport services and academic performance.

He played a central role in strengthening the school’s academic and administrative systems while promoting a culture of discipline, professionalism and continuous improvement.

His leadership was particularly reflected in the school’s impressive Primary Leaving Examination results. In 2017, 65 pupils attained Aggregate 4, while 57 pupils achieved Aggregate 4 in 2018.

These results were a reflection of the high academic standards he championed and his emphasis on effective teaching, teacher development, school discipline and the holistic development of learners.

As Principal, Dr. Okia also contributed to the establishment of additional streams, acquisition of land, construction and expansion of school facilities, provision of staff housing and development of school transport services.

For him, school leadership was not merely about managing an institution. It was about creating an environment in which teachers could perform at their best and pupils could discover and realise their potential.

A Mentor Beyond The School Gates

Dr. Okia’s influence extended well beyond the schools in which he held formal positions.

Through educational workshops, research and consultancy, he supported numerous schools and educational institutions across Uganda.

He mentored school directors, teachers and non-teaching staff, sharing his knowledge and experience to strengthen institutional leadership, management and academic performance.

Many of those who interacted with him remember him not simply as an administrator, but as a mentor who was willing to listen, advise and encourage others.

He believed strongly in developing people and was generous with his knowledge. His willingness to guide emerging school leaders and teachers made him an important source of professional counsel for many in the education fraternity.

A Life Of Continuous Learning

For a man who dedicated his life to education, Dr. Okia was also a passionate believer in continuous learning.

His own academic journey demonstrated the importance he attached to professional growth.

He earned a Bachelor of Public Administration and Management from Nkumba University, followed by a Postgraduate Diploma in Project Planning and Management from Uganda Management Institute.

He subsequently obtained a Master’s degree in Educational Planning, Policy and Management from Kyambogo University.

In 2022, he reached another major milestone when he attained his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Education from Kyambogo University.

The achievement was a fitting reflection of a lifelong commitment to learning, research and intellectual development.

Even after attaining senior positions in education, he continued to pursue knowledge, believing that educators themselves must remain students throughout their careers.

A Man Of Many Interests

Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Okia was remembered as a warm, sociable, approachable and versatile person.

Those who knew him described him as a quick learner, researcher, problem solver and change-tolerant leader. He valued relationships and enjoyed interacting with people from different backgrounds.

Away from the demands of his professional life, he enjoyed dancing, music, watching sport and travelling. He also cherished spending time with his family, friends and colleagues.

These interests reflected a man who understood that life was about more than work and professional achievement. He valued human connection and made time for the people around him.

A Father Figure And Friend

To those who knew him closely, Dr. Okia was much more than an educationist. He was a mentor, adviser, colleague, friend and father figure to many.

He had a gift for empowering others and was always willing to share his experience with people seeking guidance. His approach to mentorship was rooted in generosity, patience and a belief that one person’s success should help create opportunities for others.

His influence therefore cannot be measured solely by the positions he held or the institutions he helped build. It is equally reflected in the people who became better professionals, leaders and individuals because they encountered him.

A Legacy That Will Endure

The passing of Dr. Okia is a profound loss to his family, the education fraternity, the media and broadcasting community, and the many people who benefited from his wisdom, leadership and mentorship. Yet his life leaves behind a legacy that will continue to endure.

It lives in the classrooms where pupils continue to learn, in the teachers he inspired, in the school leaders he mentored, in the institutions he helped establish and strengthen, and in the countless people who continue to apply the lessons and values he shared. His was a life built around service.

He entered the education profession as a teacher and rose through the ranks to become a school leader, broadcaster, consultant, researcher and scholar. At every stage, he remained committed to one central purpose: using education to improve lives.

Dr. Okia understood that the true measure of an educator is not simply the number of pupils taught, but the number of lives transformed.

His contribution to Uganda’s education sector will therefore be remembered not only through academic results, institutions and professional accomplishments, but also through the generations of people he inspired.

Dr. Okia lived a life of education, leadership, mentorship and service. His legacy is one of excellence, dedication, knowledge and humanity.

Though his journey has come to an end, the lessons he imparted and the lives he touched will continue to speak for him.

He will be deeply missed by his family, colleagues, former pupils, friends and the wider education community.
