The skies over Karuziika Palace opened up this morning in a dramatic storm that sent mourners scrambling for shelter — but for some Batooro subjects, the heavy rain was much more than a weather event.

As strong winds and torrential rain swept through the royal grounds where the body of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV lies in state, subjects took to social media to interpret the spectacle through the lens of Tooro tradition.

Some described it as the late king “speaking”, while others said Oyo was “striking back” or expressing displeasure over events surrounding his succession. The reactions came against the backdrop of a bitter dispute over the alleged election of Prince George Desmond Kamurasi as Oyo’s successor — a claim announced by journalist Andrew Mwenda but rejected by senior cultural officials.

For many subjects, therefore, the sudden storm became an emotionally charged moment in an already tense period for the kingdom. “Don’t ever underestimate the power of a king,” one subject wrote, adding: “The true heir must be announced.” The dramatic downpour also revived discussions among elders about the traditional meaning attached to unusual occurrences during the death and burial of important cultural figures.

For some Batooro, the rain and lightning imagery associated with Enkuba Etutiire is understood as carrying symbolic significance following the death of an important person. Whether interpreted spiritually, culturally or simply as a natural occurrence, the storm has added another powerful image to the final days of mourning for King Oyo.

Interruption

A heavy downpour interrupted mourning activities at Karuziika Royal Palace in Fort Portal this morning, forcing hundreds of mourners who had gathered to pay their last respects to the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV to seek shelter.

But while the rain brought a temporary halt to the solemn proceedings, some elders of Tooro Kingdom interpreted the dramatic weather as carrying a deeper cultural meaning — a final communication from the fallen king to his subjects. According to the elders, the Batooro have traditional interpretations of unusual events that occur following the death of an important cultural leader, particularly a king.

They linked this morning’s heavy rainfall to what they described as “Enkuba Etutiire”, a Tooro expression associated with lightning striking during rainfall and used in traditional interpretations surrounding the sudden or shocking death of an important person. For some elders, the timing of the rain, as mourners gathered to bid farewell to the late Omukama, created a powerful symbolic image.

“The king is speaking to us. We have to listen and remain united,” one elder said as he took shelter from the rain with other mourners at the palace. The elder said the rain was being viewed by some members of the community as a form of farewell from the late Omukama to his subjects. “The king has been taken from us, but perhaps this is his way of reminding us that Tooro must remain together. We should not allow differences to divide the kingdom,” he said.

A sombre morning

The downpour came as mourners had gathered at Karuziika Royal Palace to continue paying their final respects to Omukama Oyo, whose death has plunged Tooro and the wider country into mourning. The atmosphere at the royal palace had been sombre, with mourners arriving to view the body of the monarch and pay tribute to a king who spent more than three decades on the Tooro throne.

As the rain intensified, mourners hurriedly moved away from exposed areas of the palace grounds, with some seeking shelter under tents and other structures. For a few minutes, the sound of heavy rainfall dominated the royal grounds, temporarily drowning out conversations and disrupting the otherwise solemn mourning programme.

Yet among some Batooro elders, the interruption was not regarded merely as an ordinary weather event. They attached spiritual and cultural symbolism to the rain, saying traditional Batooro beliefs often provide interpretations for unusual occurrences surrounding the death and burial of prominent members of society. An elder said the circumstances surrounding the rain were particularly emotional because it came while the kingdom was mourning its king. “It is difficult for people to look at this only as rain. For us, these things can carry meaning. The king is no longer physically with us, but his presence and his message can remain with the people,” the elder said.

‘A message of unity’

Another elder said the most important message that mourners should draw from the moment was unity. “We have lost our king. This is the time for Tooro to be together. Whatever disagreements exist, they should not destroy the kingdom,” he said. The elder said the cultural interpretation of the rainfall should be understood within the traditions and beliefs of the Batooro rather than as a scientific explanation of the weather.

He said generations of Batooro had attached meaning to certain natural occurrences, particularly during moments of profound grief. “Nature is sometimes interpreted through our culture. When something unusual happens at such a moment, people naturally search for meaning. For many of us, this rain reminds us that the king is saying goodbye,” he said. The interpretation added another emotional dimension to the mourning at Karuziika, where the death of Omukama Oyo has already triggered an outpouring of grief across Tooro.

Tradition and mourning

The Batooro have a long cultural tradition of interpreting important events through symbols, rituals and oral traditions passed from one generation to another. The expression “Enkuba Etutiire”has been invoked by some elders in explaining the emotional significance they attach to rainfall and lightning in circumstances involving the death of an important person.

According to the elders, lightning is naturally associated with rainfall, making the appearance of heavy rain during a major mourning event particularly striking. For them, the symbolism is not necessarily about predicting events but about helping the community understand and process moments of loss.

The death of a king is regarded as an especially significant event because the Omukama occupies both a cultural and symbolic position in the kingdom. Oyo ascended to the throne as a young monarch and remained a central figure in Tooro for more than three decades. His death has therefore left a major emotional and cultural void among his subjects.

Succession tensions

The emotional mourning has, however, been accompanied by tensions over the future leadership of the kingdom. The succession debate intensified following an announcement by veteran journalist Andrew Mwenda that Prince George Desmond Kamurasi had allegedly been elected as the next Omukama. The announcement has generated controversy within Tooro, with senior cultural officials distancing themselves from the alleged election.

Omusuuga Charles Kamurasi Akiiki, one of the senior figures in the kingdom’s cultural establishment, has rejected the suggestion that he was aware of the alleged election and questioned the source of Mwenda’s information. The development has exposed deep divisions within the kingdom at a particularly sensitive moment when the attention of the Batooro is expected to remain focused on mourning their fallen king.

The dispute has created anxiety among some elders and subjects, who fear that disagreements over succession could overshadow the final rites of Omukama Oyo. It is against this background that the elders’ interpretation of this morning’s rain as a call for unity has gained particular emotional significance.

One elder said the controversy should not be allowed to define the final days of Oyo’s reign. “We should mourn our king first. We should give him a dignified farewell. After that, the kingdom can address its issues according to the proper traditions and procedures,” he said.

Focus on Oyo’s final journey

Despite the brief disruption caused by the rain, mourners eventually resumed their activities as they continued to pay their respects to the late monarch.

The body of Omukama Oyo remains at Karuziika Royal Palace as the kingdom prepares for his final burial rites. His burial is scheduled for September 12, with preparations continuing amid heightened public interest in the final farewell. For many mourners, the rain became one of the defining moments of the morning — an unexpected interruption that transformed an already emotional gathering into a deeply symbolic one.

Whether viewed simply as a natural weather occurrence or through the lens of Batooro cultural tradition, the downpour left a powerful impression on those gathered at Karuziika. For the elders who interpreted it as a message from the late Omukama, however, the meaning was clear. “The king is telling us to remain united,” one elder said. “We must listen to that message.” As Tooro prepares to lay its king to rest, the appeal for unity could become one of the most enduring messages of the mourning period.
