The biggest takeaway from President Yoweri Museveni’s slightly amended cabinet list, is the internal bloodless coup the maker of the list has silently carried out against his own government.
The only difference between Gen Yoweri Museveni’s instant palace coup and the one he launched against the government of Dr Apollo Milton Obote from Luweero, is that whereas in the latter he used guns, in the former he has merely used some piece of paper and a pen to cause it. But Jesus, what a slightly amended way of causing coups. Neither has there been use of bazooka, bazooka sounds nor blood splashed all over town.
The other equally biggest takeaway from the slightly amended cabinet list is the slightly amended bloodless and gun-less coup Gen Museveni has carried out against Gen Kainerugaba Muhoozi’s Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) political movement, leaving the First Son’s 2026 presidential ambitions upstaged.
Muhoozi, prior to arrival of the cabinet list, was threatening to cause a lawful coup through the 2026 using his PLU as the bazooka. He had tried to dissuade Muhoozi from running for power in 2026 but the son had insisted on exercising his constitutional right by standing for power anyway.
Despite being a serving military officer, Muhoozi was not allowing that disadvantaged position to dissuade him from standing for power which he rightly thinks was his constitutional right to do so. With such a deadlock threatening his grip on power, the senior rebel decided to undercut the junior rebel by causing a slightly amended bloodless coup against himself, cutting short the junior rebel’s coup, extending the putsch at least beyond 2026.
If I may ask, where does the slightly amended coup leaves Frank Gashumba, Tamale Mirundi and company? Well, since the `coup` was caused by a slightly amended cabinet list, who knows, the appointing authority may return one day with another all-inclusive cabinet list, taking in those it left stranded in PLU.
